Faustus hesitated for a moment then shrugged and went with his usual story. He'd finally come up with something that wasn't a lie or complete evasion in his second year of training. He didn't like lying to people who would have to trust him if it came down to a fight.
"It was complicated between them but in the end he died in the war. I was only a baby so I never got to know him and they never got to sort anything out." He paused and smiled slightly. "It would have been interesting if they had. Strange to grow up with a father but I think I would have liked it."
"Hey, I'm no monk," he said with mock-protest. "I just don't feel the need to talk about my conquests in the office." That was his need to keep secrets rearing it's head. And the fact that half his conquests tended to be male and he had never felt like discussing his sexuality in the office.
"Thanks," he said as he took the plate, digging in immediately. He always got hungry when he got cold. Apparently that was fairly normal.
"Well, I empathise with her frustrations," he said between bites. "I think what she actually did shows her youth and inexperience because if she'd had more experience she'd have done what I did and kept her mouth shut and her opinions to herself. She'll end up paying for that though since she now has a departmental reputation, if not a Ministry-wide reputation, as a snitch."
He ate more of the lasagna as he considered her question. It was almost ironic really given who his father was. "Depends. I mean, except for the thing with Sirius Black... and let's face it the Order had it right there... the Order's goals didn't really conflict with the Aurors' goals. They all wanted Voldemort dead. If I'd been an Auror back then I wouldn't have viewed working for the Order as being a breaking of trust with the DMLE. In fact given what the Ministry was like then under Fudge, I probably would have considered it necessary. And let's face it, Shacklebolt and Tonks were experienced enough Aurors to know when to leak information to the Order and when not to." He took a drink of his tea. "Now the Death Eaters who were also Aurors were breaking that trust. Because they were part of a secret organisation that was working in direct opposition to the Aurors. They were betraying the oaths they took when they became Aurors."
He shrugged. "But there's a vast difference between giving confidential information to a secret organisation than to the media. The media just wants to make money and doesn't care who it hurts. Giving information to someone like the Order is... I suppose you might term it a necessary evil. You're leaking confidential information but you're leaking it for a purpose which is, for lack of a better word, good."
He frowned and snorted, shaking his head. "I'm not sure if any of that made sense really. I suppose I don't like it but if the organisation has a limited purpose like the Order did then I can accept it."
