Regulus wondered why they were even wasting time about this. "Nothing you or Severus or James say is relevant or binding," he replied. "I know full well what my standing and Remus' are while Dumbledore is alive. If you're telling me that all those comments about stepping up in case something happens to him are based on something solid, then we can continue this discussion. If you aren't ready to say something of the sort, then let's assume that Dumbledore will do whatever the hell he wants with or without your approval. For that matter, that's really not what she's saying, is it? I don't understand her fully, but I don't think any of us is grasping what she means." He planned to rectify that. "She has a way of looking at people like they are really stupid while smiling and calling you 'love'."
He sighed. "Regardless, this isn't important. Once Greyback knows, there are too many people who can indirectly be affected. His son, who knows; his wife, who doesn't. Relatives, friends, we will do what we need to do."
Regulus nodded. "I didn't think you had invited here to discuss my personal life, although you do realise that if you don't know this, you have bigger problems than I do, right?" he said with a tiny smile. "The reason why I've kept this as private as possible is very simple: security. If they don't know, the Dark Lord can't see it in their heads. James had to find out because I was teaching him legilimency and occlumency. Dumbledore, because he's an annoying know-it-all. Potter found out from my house elf during the war. The Healers and mediwizards that healed me when I came back have been obliviated in a very obvious manner, so that if the Dark Lord gets to them, he can see the obliviation and the fact that he can't get through and spare them if he feels so inclined. I know it's doubtful, but it's the best I could do to protect them and myself.
"He used my house elf to hide one of the Horcruxes. Do you know what that is? If you do, then you have to understand that at the time, I thought it was the only one. I didn't know about the other six. I recovered the Horcrux in the cave where he had hidden it. I sent Kreacher back with it, and died in the cave. No one would know. From what I've read and was told, the Dark Lord died right after, and no one realised what I had done. I think they thought you lot had killed me," he said. "Sirius thought they had killed me. A lot of conjectures, but no proof. I like it like that."
