Summary: Lori's final patient of the day is a familiar one.
Lori felt exhausted after his shift. His muscles ached from staying in one position, holding his wand steady with light pouring out for the Healer to perform the surgery. It had been a complicated procedure, but in the end they'd saved the patient, who'd come in with a board stuck through his stomach, several burns and a severe head wound. The severity of the injury was such that magic alone wouldn't help, and they'd needed to tread carefully to avoid any more irreparable damage. The patient was going to be fine, after a long recuperation and dozens of restorative potions, but it had been close. And it had been far from the only case that day.
Lori was coming to understand more and more about emergency medicine, and had all but decided to make it his specialty. He would have to finish his initial training in all departments, but emergency was where he felt the most comfortable. He was going over his options, and wondering if he could declare his intentions early, and double up on some of the training. It wasn't that he wanted to rush through training, but he knew what he wanted and he wanted to achieve his goals as soon as possible.
He was so wrapped up in his thoughts that he didn't notice Jacob at first. When he did, he almost stumbled over his exhausted feet, and came to an abrupt halt in the hall. He felt his pulse start to race almost instantly, and he swallowed past a suddenly dry throat. He was close enough to see that Jacob had some minor to moderate wounds, burns and bruises mostly. Abby, the Mediwitch on duty, was apologizing that all the on-duty Healers were with patients, but if Jacob would like to wait he could.
Lori moved closer, and nodded at Abby. "I can take care of this," he said, trying to sound more confident than he felt. There was something about Jacob that made him feel like a little kid, out of his depth and out of control. "What happened? Were you at Diagon when the attack hit?" And if so, why had he waited so long to be tended to?
