"Slytherin logic, hm? I guess I can live with that," he said with a chuckle before shaking his head gently. "I'm not saying you won't. I'm only trying to reassure you that I'm not crazy -- clumsily, apparently, but that's all."
Again, Remus let Regulus get up and pace, easily sensing the nervous energy in his normally controlled lover. "I can only go by what he tells me. I didn't know what was said before only that you two had talked."
Privately, he thought this was becoming a conversation about Sirius because at it's core it was a conversation about family -- and that would forever include Sirius and be affected by Sirius. "I didn't say he didn't know the traditions. He doesn't know which specific ones are important to you. He doesn't know, for example, any of what you just told me this morning about not using the Cruciatus. He doesn't know what you and I talked about two weeks ago when you said you could keep traditions and be a little more human.
He thought he was the wrong person to accuse of not knowing the depths of Sirius' selfishness, not after he nearly turned Remus into a murderer for his own petty amusements. But he kept silent about that. Saying anything was only going to prolong this part of the discussion and antagonise Regulus. "Unfortuneately, I think you do represent, not the nagging mother, but the source of his insecurities. Until we came to this time I don't think he realised how much he truly wants to be the brother you can count on, but doesn't think he can be.
"But, this discussion shouldn't be about him. It's about us. And I'm not asking you to make your child the test case." Although how on earth this was going to work if Regulus couldn't even say our child, or we'll find once for all that he kept saying he'd give them this chance, Remus was beginning to wonder. "I just told you I'm not going to rely solely on them. That's the option I have now, with the limited time I've had to work on this so far."
With a soft sigh he pulled his knees up to his chest, looking up at Regulus while resting his chin on his knees. "I know," he said quietly, hating that he had to admit to that knowing because he was trying very hard to be the strong, confident one for Regulus' sake and wondering how he was going to worthy of being a partner to the Head of the Black Family, if he couldn't even manage that much. "I know how high the chance for failure is. I'm optimistic, not delusional, I promise."
