Alastor nodded again, thinking this had the potential to put him in a very awkward position at the office should there ever be a schism between Potter and the Order. It would be different than it had been during the war. The Head Auror hadn't been the opposition then.
"No, that they didn't." Alastor laughed with a shake of his head. "If you die tomorrow, what happens next? That sounds about right. There'd be a meeting. If it wasn't already all over the headlines, those of us here would have alerted Snape first and let the others know at the meeting. If not, we'd still call the meeting, but I'd lay odds someone didn't bother to come and gave it up for lost.
"From there, you'll have each of the smaller factions arguing over who should lead and who would or wouldn't follow whom and who no longer feels any need to work with the Order at all. At best, everyone would agree to follow Potter or Snape, and there'd be the disgruntled few who only paid that lip service until they found a better option."
Alastor sighed. It was one of the pitfalls of having such a large group revolve around a single, charismatic leader. Cut the head off the snake and watch them flounder. It's why the Death Eaters fell apart after the first war.
"Three?" He thought about that for a moment before nodding slowly. "That might work. Small enough it's not war by committee, and large enough there is a clear majority on decisions. You'd need three people who can cover knowledge, planning, and politicising. And preferably from three separate inner factions so there'd be a reason for them all to continue working together."
