"Perhaps because 'before' I had nothing in particular to occupy my time, once I'd broken Riddle's curse. These days, there are the little details of the Headmastery and the Order, not to mention training James and Sirius. 'The way I want things' has precious little to do with it." Snape shoved a hand through his hair, clawing it back out of his face in a quick, exasperated gesture. "I'm an extremely busy man, Harry. Nevertheless, I've already accepted that dinner invitation. I am making an effort."
Snape responded easily to Harry's fusillade of questions about Macnair. "Both: if he's not given orders, he'll go out looking for fun on his own. He likes youth, beauty, anyone of either sex who mistakenly thinks they're in a position of power, because he loves to prove himself stronger. He always plays to break his toys.
He's not uppercrust in his manner. He has no particular hideout he returns to: he likes to blend in, lose himself in crowds, the way he lost himself among the flunkies in the Ministry. He prefers to hide out in dingy places, pubs - the seedier the better. He enjoys stalking his prey: between the love of the hunt and the physical dominance, he's as much of an Alpha as any werewolf.
As for special, memorable places, I have no idea. Death Eaters aren't the sharing sort, and I never had the chance to Legilimens him to enough of a depth to uncover any such enlightening bits of background."
Snape shook his head in response to the questions about the newspaper article. "The act of contacting the paper shows a political awareness - and the text shows an eloquence - that are both uncharacteristic of him. I'd be extremely surprised if he was the only killer. The contact would've been an accomplice of Macnair's: most likely Rabastan or Bellatrix, possibly both."
Of course, there was also the possibility that Harry's daughter had been one of the killers, and that one of the others had prompted her to contact the paper. But Snape didn't bother to mention it: it was no more than a possibility, and certainly not one that Harry would willingly consider.
