"A girl can always hope," she answered, smiling. This was so easy, returning to old dynamics without having to think. She wished it could be the same with everyone else, but the day before had proven just how impossible that was.
Marlene shook her head. "No, I'm asking you to trust me, to believe that I'd never get you hurt on my watch, that I'd never let anything bad happen to you. That's what I want you to do."
She chuckled. "However, if it makes you feel better, you can doubt the security and just assume that people will try to kill you. I wouldn't want you to enjoy yourself too much."
She kissed his cheek again, and then stood up. "I'll just get what you need since it's a surprise." It wasn't as if she thought he'd say no, and if he hated it, they could always come back. She added just a few things in her own bag. They wouldn't need too much anyway. "All right, I think we got everything. Ready to go love."
