Cadfael let himself into the small cottage that belonged to his mentor, closing the door quietly behind him.
“Fenrir?” he called softly, not wishing to disturb the old werewolf’s sleep if he’d managed to get some rest in the aftermath of the full moon.
“Here,” came the crotchety reply from the living room and Cadfael sighed. He’d hoped Fenrir was sleeping. The full moons were difficult for the old werewolf now. The transformations took so much out of him and he refused to take the Wolfsbane which might have made them a little easier.
He walked into the living room and found Fenrir sitting in his armchair, looking frail and tired. “You should be in bed.”
“I should be in my grave but I’m not there either,” Fenrir snapped. “Stop fussing.”
Cadfael allowed himself a chuckle then sat down in the armchair opposite Fenrir’s. “Did you want some tea?”
Fenrir snorted. “I may be an old man, boy, but I’m not dead yet. Whiskey.”
Cadfael rolled his eyes but didn’t argue. Instead he summoned the bottle of whiskey he knew was in the kitchen along with two glasses. He poured them each a measure then swirled the amber liquid around his glass as Fenrir took a swallow of his own.
“I had a good night on the full.”
Fenrir gave him a shrewd look, his eyes lighting up with interest. “Yeah? You planning on telling me about it?”
Cadfael chuckled and pretended to look innocent. “Why? Would you actually be interested in hearing what I did?”
Fenrir gave a hoarse, barking laugh and saluted Cadfael with his glass. “Tell me, boy. Merlin knows I did fuck all on the full moon. Sounds like you did something special.”
Cadfael grinned, a cold, savage expression that made Fenrir’s eyes light up even more. “I… might have enjoyed myself a little.” His expression suddenly shifted to a cold, deadly, merciless look that had Fenrir crowing and rocking back and forth in his chair, laughing wildly.
“Following in my footsteps, were you, boy?”
“Honouring you,” Cadfael corrected as he took a sip of his whiskey. “People should remember what you were capable of, what your pack was capable of. I simply… chose to remind them.”
Fenrir cackled and leaned forward. “Go on, boy. Tell me!”
Cadfael grinned and leaned forward as well, starting his tale of blood and death and destruction for the amusement of his friend and mentor.
