Summary: The aftermaths of the attacks

He wasn't sure why he was left alive, but as soon as they've left, he scrambled for his watch and called the office for a report. Attack at the house of the Chief of the Wizengamot. Eight masked Death Eaters. Rabastan Lestrange. (hesitation) Lily Potter. All dead. Office searched and emptied."

He slumped back onto the floor, a headache from the hexes they'd used on him quickly forming. He needed a minute before he could get back on his feet again. Then he needed to get to work, talk to the ones sent here, go to the Ministry for questioning. It was going to be a long night and day.

There was still a numb feeling in his chest when he arrived at work, but he had no time to dwell on that. He could not focus on Lily or he'd crumble, and now he needed to work.

They were already contacting everyone on the watches, so Harry did what was most important, called the Aurors at Malfoy Manor, hoping it had not been attacked and drew a breath of relief when he saw the face of the Auror.

He told the Auror to get the Minister and tell her the important details. The Chief of the Wizengamot dead in an attack led by Rabastan. Garden Court attacked by Voldemort. He left out all other details for now, as this was something for a face to face meeting.

As soon as the conversation was finished, he started coordinating, arranging for Aurors to be assigned and moved. The heads of departments were going into lock down and any chance he'd had at cutting down on security was gone, though right now that was the least of his worries.

Narcissa took the news with stoic silence. They had done this once already. She got the house elves to call the rest of the family, including their newest guest. They would have to ensure that they were safe, moved to closer rooms. It was something that was necessary.

The house elf returned frantic, saying that Master Lucius was missing. A search of the house proved the house elf right.

She'd have to figure out what was happening, but first, she needed to make sure that Draco was all right. He needed to survive. He would be the head of the Malfoy family if anything happened to Lucius, and she would make sure to protect her son. "Get my family here," she told the house elf. After that, she could move them to the Ministry until they figured what in Merlin's name was going on.

Draco had awoken when the house elf knocked on the door and then came in, profusely apologizing for interrupting them. "Madame Malfoy needs to see you," the elf squeaked.

He rolled out of bed and let the robes cover him. "Put a sock in it," he said to the squeaky elf as he walked past. Sure enough, the elf found a pair of socks and put them in its mouth.

"Yes, mother," he said with a head full of bed hair.

"Blasted beasts," she murmured when she saw only Draco here. "I said I want all of my family here, and now! Everyone in this household. Tell them that they must be ready to travel, prepare bags for all of them, and be quick about it."

She waited for the house elf to have left. "Your father has disappeared. The house elves and portraits can't find him, in fact some of the portraits are saying that it was Scorpius who came into my room and then they disappeared. I've already checked, and Scorpius is in his room. Until we can figure this out, we're going to the Ministry. I want you there while the Aurors check the house."

Narcissa sighed. "I wouldn't normally worry, but there were two other attacks. Odgen and his wife are dead, and Potter's son's home was broken into. They managed to escape, but it was the Dark Lord. You should get ready to go."

Draco arched an eyebrow at his mother's reaction to the house elf. He didn't know about anyone else, but he had told Astoria to stay in bed.

"Polyjuice," Draco said as he remembered the hair they got back from Scorpius, his brain connected the dots quickly. "How are you, mother?" He knew they both could handle themselves just fine under pressure, but it was still courteous to ask.

"I'm surprised your body guards haven't whisked you away yet," he shrugged with a smirk. He didn't know why they hadn't left already. The elves could stay behind, pack the bags, and then follow. But it wasn't his house... yet. He resisted the effort to ask his mother who she was going to appoint as Ogden's replacement.

Narcissa nodded. "Probably, but I still wanted to make sure that Scorpius was all right. It explains how she got in and out." She had no doubt that this was Bellatrix. It made sense. "I'm fine."

She smiled. "I haven't told them that my husband is missing yet. I wanted to make sure that I had you up and ready to go, which is why I asked for you and your lovely wife. We can't wait any longer, Draco. Get them ready and let's go. I have to meet with Potter."

She stood up and summoned her cloak, before taking her wand out. "Take care of Belvina as well." She had a feeling that the woman could be a lot more lethal than Draco, though. "I'll see you at the Ministry. Don't waste any time."

Cormac had been just about to get into bed when the call came. He'd been on Hogwarts duty for the past fifteen hours and been looking forward to crawling into bed. It would have been nice if Colin had been there with him, but he'd spent twenty-years sleeping mostly alone. He was used to it.

But when the call came in, he was wide awake. Uncle Tiberius he thought helplessly. For most of his life, the man had been the closest thing to a father he'd had. He dressed quickly in a fresh set of Hit Wizard robes, and Apparated to the Ministry to find out what was going on.

He wondered if Audrey knew, or if he could get there in time to tell her himself. He thought it would be easier coming from him. But first, he needed information. It didn't take long to gather it all, though he didn't think he understood. Lily Potter had killed his uncle. Or at least, that was the best guess of the Auror who had witnessed it all.

He excused himself after the briefing. He knew he wasn't going to be assigned ot this case, he was too close. But he didn't care about that. Right now all he could focus on was Audrey and getting to her. He had a job to do, but right now family came first.

They had been woken up in the middle of the night, Aurors getting into their rooms checking that they were all right. They didn't explain for a while, and asked for them to get dressed, because they might have to leave. They woke Lucy up. Only after they were all awake, they were informed about her parents' death.

Audrey didn't know what to do and say. She'd been raised to behave properly, never let anyone see your true emotions. Politicians were better than that, but right now she didn't feel like she could move.

When Cormac arrived, she was still sitting on the couch. She looked up and tried to smile at her cousin. "You've heard. Do you know what happened?"

He took a seat next to her on the couch, but didn't hug her however much he wanted to. They were politician's kids, Audrey herself was a politician, and both of them knew what they had to do.

"Yes," he answered her, reaching to briefly squeeze her hand. There would be time for mourning in private. "It was Rabastan Lestrange." He hesitated a moment, wondering if she'd heard the rest. "And Lily Potter. The Auror who survived...he's positive she's the one who did the killing."

She pulled her hand away as soon as Cormac let her go and joined her finger together, almost mimicking a prayer, but there would be no wishes granted tonight.

The news had her tense again. "Lily?" As if she didn't have enough reason to dislike Percy's family and now this. She'd love to see how St. Potter would spin this around.

Audrey stood up and walked to the fireplace, staring at one of the pictures on the mantel. It was of her and Cormac with her parents. It'd been taken ages ago, right after the war, when everything seemed to finally get better. "They are never going to catch her, will they?" But if they did, she'd make sure Lily would rot in Azkaban forever. "Thank you for telling me. I'm sure we won't get the information for now."

"It's not for certain, and there could have been Polyjuice involved," he said, though he didn't believe it. Lily was just a girl, and children were easily influenced. Lestrange and Voldemort had had weeks to twist her, and that she was still alive indicated they'd had success.

He followed her to the fireplace, and smiled vaguely at the picture. "We will, but it's not going to be quick." He wished he could tell her differently, but he wouldn't lie, not to her. "You deserve to know. This is family. It's more important than procedure."

And if he lost his job, he'd deal with that too.

"Of course. Nothing is certain." Harry would have made sure that there was some leeway, but she knew that it was her. It made sense after her attack on him. That had been only the beginning, but Cormac didn't know all of that.

Audrey turned her head to look at her cousin. "Thank you. I won't tell anyone that I know, not for now. When the time comes, if she's ever brought to justice then it's a different matter." She hugged him tight. "Thank you again," she said softly before kissing his cheek. "You should go back to work, but I'll see you tomorrow. Don't go off on your own after work."

Narcissa arrived at the Ministry with her security in tow. For once, she didn't go to her office, but walked straight into Potter office after having made sure that someone was getting her secretary back in the office.

She sat down. "Lucius has disappeared. I questioned the portraits and they said that Scorpius went in and they never came out again. Scorpius never left his room. I'm pretty sure it was Bella. Now tell me what happened to the Odgens."

Harry had not expected the Minister to come into his office but to be called into hers. When she did arrive he stood up, and waited to sit down until she did. "Minister," he said, listening when she said Lucius disappeared.

"So that explains what Bellatrix was doing tonight and we're up to three attacks," he said. "They attacked Garden Court too."

"Anyway. Starting with the Ogdens. Rabastan Lestrange and a group of Death Eaters came into the house, no one knows how. From what the surviving Auror tells us, the masked men spread out through out the house, we're assuming they put up anti-apparition jinxes since the Ogdens didn't Apparate out. We know they raided the office and the house of important papers while Rabastan led the actual attack. The Aurors were petrified before they saw anyone, the Ogdens were killed trying to escape."

He paused if but for a second. "Rabastan had someone else in company as well," he said and by Merlin he wished he didn't have to do this. "My daughter was seemingly with him. They were holding hands, kissing, torturning and killing. We know she killed at least one of the Aurors, tortured the survivor. She likely was the one to kill the Ogdens as well, but we aren't absolutely sure about that since our witness was still petrified at the time."

"We cannot rule out polyjuice, especially if Bellatrix used it to get entrance to Malfoy manor and since they purposely left one Auror alive to tell the tale. That is no doubt directed at me and James. However with Selwynn's and Scorpius' testimony, we cannot rule out that it was her." He handed Narcissa the open file. He was almost surprised that he could sound as professional and detached as he did, but pushing his emotions down and out of the way helped. He could feel later.

"As I said, there was an attack on Garden Court as well tonight," he went on, taking the next file. "Voldemort himself attacked almost exactly at the same time that Rabastan led the attack on the Ogdens," he said handing her the other attack. "Again we have no idea how he got in. We know he wasn't alone. The occupants woke up from the wards going off as he tried to get upstairs and had just enough time to get out on their brooms before he broke through. The house was destroyed and set on fire. There is nothing left. James stripped it of spells and left it for the Muggle fire department."

He handed her that file too. "The attacks were simultaneous, they all appeared in houses which you cannot Apparate to. The wards were intact when they arrived and when they left. They hardly used the front door or we'd know. The Floo was disconnected completely in two out of thee cases, tightly controlled in the third. And yet the Floo seems to be the most logical answer. We're looking into that at the moment."

Lily Potter and Rabastan Lestrange, what a nightmare!

She looked at the files while she talked, her eyes skimming expectedly over what was important, already forgetting the irrelevant things. "This is going to be hell when the press finds out, and considering the way the message was relayed, expect it to end up in the media sooner rather than later. Get with Jorkins when you have time, get a statement ready on why the news wasn't released by us, how it damages the investigation, how it's connected to another case. We're keeping the news about Lucius and Scorpius under wrap. The last thing I need is people wondering why Death Eaters can walk into my house. Get your son ready too. Like it or not, the press likes him, and they will ask him question." The boy would end up being more useful than Potter with his reassuring smile.

"I see even He is obsessed with your son. The house has no strategic value, no governmental impact, nothing other than your son being there." If there was any way to use James to get to the Dark Lord, she would have, but she couldn't hand him another Potter. "Your son's spells were enough to keep Voldemort at bay while trained security couldn't keep them away from the Chief of the Wizengamot. What's wrong with this picture? Why can a twenty year old trainee put spells to stop Him and not your people?"

She stacked the reports and let them drop on the desk, in front of Potter. "Go down there, and find out how. If we shut down the Floo, we will have chaos in our hands, but until you do, I have no choice. We can't have him using our Floo to enter every home in the country. If you're right, this could have been so much worse, only his arrogance saved us. Kill the people in charge, you have anarchy, and He takes over." She stood up. "Get me answers and get them quick."

Harry nodded at the orders, and for once he did not grumble or even frown about the media. No this was about trying to find a way to protect his daughter as far as was possible. He'd listen. He'd do everything he can to pay attention and learn all the things he needed to know before meeting the press.

"I'll try to meet with Jorkins today if possible," he said. "And I'll talk to Jamie."

Harry looked at her when she questioned the wards. "One because my son had wards on his second floor where they sleep and the Ogdens did not. Two because my son though young is a very powerful wizard. There is strength to his spells that most don't have." It wasn't bragging when it was true.

He nodded. "Yes, Minister," he said. "We'll find out and you'll have your answers as soon as we do."

Dylan and Ronan

Dylan felt as though he was walking in a heavy dense fog. As if everything was wrapped in cotton and not real. He arrived at the Ministry with Jamie the moment they were done at the house though he didn't want to leave. There was no reason to stay though so he left, and now he was working, doing everything he was supposed to without really feeling any of it.

He looked up as Ronan arrived, nodding in greeting. "Hi," he said. "The house isn't there any more," he said and the words were his and the voice was his but it still sounded so far off, as if someone else was speaking. "Did you hear? Or were you out on the other cases?"

Ronan had been called in, like everyone else it seemed, to deal with Odgen's death, and then suddenly some people were being sending to Malfoy manor, and everything was hush hush. He hated it when politics and investigations mixed, but in a case like this, it was inevitable. He wasn't even surprised that the Minister was walking around offices like it was a normal occurrence. She'd want people to see her, to know that she was fine and still leading the government.

When he saw Dylan, he approached him, trying to find out where he'd been assigned. When he spoke, thought, Ronan put a privacy spell around them. "I hadn't heard. I'm not sure anyone has heard, and if there's anyone assigned to the case, it's been kept really quiet. So you might want to do the same until Potter tells you otherwise." In cases like this, heads would roll for a lot less than a wrong word to the wrong person. "So where are you staying? The others?"

Dylan only nodded to Ronan's first words, putting them to memory though he didn't understand how it burning down could be secret. It's not like it would be for long and he hadn't mentioned why.

When Ronan asked him where he was staying though, he shook his head. "I don't know." he answered. "Jamie and Sirius have a house, Al is moving back home I think. Allison and Toby is sleeping at Hogwarts tonight, though they'll need somewhere to stay tomorrow."

He ran a hand through his head, lifting it and looking at Ronan. "We got out at least. All of us are alive. It could be worse." Only it didn't feel like it right now.

"Not that you'll get much sleep, but you can crash at our place." It was an offer that he wouldn't have made before meeting Ben, but things were different now, and Dylan was his partner. That was a special bond in itself.

"We can worry about Allison and Toby tomorrow." Knowing Ben, the invitation would be extended regardless of what Ronan wanted. Not that he really minded. "You're right. You could be dead. Things come and go, Dylan. I was on the streets for years and now, things have changed completely. Just give yourself time."

Dylan gave him a slightly tensed smile in return from the offer. "Thanks," he said. "I'll try to find something quickly." Though with everything he owned save for the clothes on his back and his broom he wasn't going to have all that much money left when he was finished getting what he needed.

At least he had his broom. He'd saved up for well over a year to buy it. "I'm sure they'll appreciate it as much as I do." And it would be good not to move into a too quiet place. That was one of those things he'd miss the most. That there was always someone around, almost noise somewhere. He remembered his flat, how quiet it had been. But he'd have to get used to that again it seemed.

He returned home late, having worked non-stop from the time they were woken up in the middle of the night. Stepping inside, he found Ginny, and wrapped his arms around her tightly, not speaking for a long while as he buried his face in her hair. Just inhaling her scent as he slowly allowed himself to feel again.

"I feel like I've I've been awake for a week," he whispered before pulling back. He looked at her. "I have more bad news," he said. "Are we alone? Can we talk? Or is Allison and Toby still here?"

He let his hand tangle in her hair. "You'll need to sit down for this one."

"They're still staying here but they aren't here at the moment. I think Allison said something about Dale giving her and Toby a tour of the castle," she said. Ginny knew Toby would enjoy it - What child wouldn't enjoy a magical castle?

"What's happened?" she asked, sensing the tension in Harry's body. Instantly she reached to rub her hand soothingly up and down her husband's back, waiting patiently for him to tell her what was wrong.

"Then let's sit," she suggested, not sure if Harry was stalling. She led him to the couch and sat down, waiting for him to sit down next to her. "Firstly - Do you want anything to eat or drink? I've not seen you since the attack. Secondly - Are you okay? No life-threatening hexes, right?"

He sank down onto the sofa next to Ginny, never letting go of he, but rather holding onto her as if she was his anchor. And yet, he needed to be strong for the both of them now.

He probably should be hungry. He couldn't remember breakfast, or lunch, or eating at all just working, but the thought of food had his stomach turning and so she shook his head. "No, I-" He cleared his throat.

"Audrey's parents were killed last night. I don't know if anyone told you or if the evening prophet is out her." He sighed, figuring that that was the information she likely already had and it was the rest she needed. "It was Lily," he then said, looking up at her. "She and Rabastan- It was Lily who killed them. It's not just practising any longer, or even being in bed with them. She's killing people."

And maybe some day the hole that opened up in his chest at saying those words would some day be filled up again, but today wasn't that day. And it would be a long time before that day came at all.

"In a bit then," she said, squeezing his hand reassuringly. She probably couldn't help with whatever was eating Harry up inside but she could make sure he was healthy and looking after himself.

"I had heard," she said. "Tiberius Ogden was an important man - It couldn't be hushed up for long."

"Lily?" she whispered, unsure if she'd heard him right. "Our Lily? Are- How do you know? It could be Polyjuice or... Or Imperius or..."

Ginny shook her head, pale and tense. "It can't be. You're wrong."

Harry felt almost nauseous telling Ginny like this, but after telling her about her relationship with the Lestranges...well at least he had some practise.

"We can't rule out Polyjuice," he said. "But given the rest we know. The relationship with Rabastan and Bellatrix. The fact that she's been practising the Unforgivables. It fits. I wish to god it didn't but it does. And we know she's not under the Imperius. Selwynn's testimony said as much. Even the spell... we know it was removed."

He sighed, because he wish he was wrong. He wished it with every fibre of his body. "They left one of the Aurors alive. She-" His breath hitched. "She tortured him. He saw her kill the other Auror, he said it seemed as if she killed the Ogdens, but even if she didn't- She killed at least one person for certain."

"It... It can't be. She can't possibly cast those spells and actually kill people. It's... Not right," she blustered, trying to get her head around the fact that her daughter was soon becoming anything but a nice young girl.

How had this happened?

"Did nobody manage to immobilise her or track where she went?" she asked quietly, knowing that the answer would not be what she wanted to hear. "Are we no closer to getting our daughter back?"

"Why didn't the Auror stop her or stop whoever was with her? How could he stand back and let her... Fuck!" Ginny swore, something she seldom did. "How could they not capture her? She's so much younger than they are."

Harry let her get it all out there, all the feelings that were raging inside himself but that he felt too numb to let out. Wrapping his arms around her he pulled her closer, held onto her tightly while taking a deep breath.

"She wasn't alone. Rabastan was with her, and they in turn had about eight or so Death Eaters. From what we know, Rabastan petrified the Aurors first, and what happened then is a bit fuzzy, but we know the door was shattered and the Ogdens killed when they were trying to escape. They'd been woken up, no one was prepared, the house was warded, the Floo was cut off."

She buried her head in the crook of Harry's neck, wrapping her arms around him as she tried to digest what he was saying. It was impossible. They had it wrong, they had to have it wrong.

"So it was a prepared attack? The Ministry had no clue at all that it would happen?" she asked, confused. "After the Minister surely he's the next in line for an attack? Why do we not have a spy - We need one!"

Ginny growled, frustrated. "We should know by now that they can get in anywhere. They had Lily in their grasp in Hogwarts. It's supposed to be safe."

Harry nodded, still holding her close, drawing his strength from the fact that she needed him to be strong. He couldn't fall apart, he'd done it once, alone out here while Ginny was sleeping, but he could not afford to do it again when his family looked to him for support.

"It's not so easy," Harry said softly. "He won't just trust someone. There are attempts, but-" He shook his head. "I know we need one."

He didn't answer the last, because he knew it was true, instead he just held her tightly, not letting go. There was nothing that could be said that would make it better, or change things, and all they could do was hope that they would be able to save their little girl.

"We still need to try and do something more, Harry. We can't live like this - Who is going to die next?" she asked, scared of the answer. Her daughter had become a murderess, her father was dead. All in a few short months.

She sighed into his shoulder and reluctantly pulled back, trying to compose herself and think about the things she could fix. Like Harry looking exhausted. "Do you want or need anything, love?"

"I'm going to ask Dumbledore what the Order can do to get her out," he said. "If we get her back then we have a start." He paused. "Of course- If and when we get her back, there is no way to guarantee that we can keep her from Azkaban."

"I'll ask Dumbledore, see if there is even a small window, something- But first we need to focus on getting her out."

"We also need to tell people. The entire Auror division knows. The entire hit-wizard division knows. It's a matter of days, at best, before it hits the press. It's inevitable. Our friends and family should hear it from us. It's the only way. I'll tell Remus and Neville individually, and Al. And then we need to gather the family and tell them as one."

He swallowed. "And we can only hope and pray that Audrey understands." He shook his head. "To hide and not come out until this is over?" he suggested with a half snort. "We both know that I neither can nor will. I need some sleep, and I need to tell our family and get our daughter back. Right this moment I can't think any further than that."

"We'll tell the family tomorrow? The floo is safe again, we can meet at Godric's Hollow. It's large enough."

"There's not. There's also no guarantee if she'll be safe enough to be kept out of Azkaban," she said quietly, even though it felt as if something inside of her shattered as she said the words she'd been dreading. "Darling... She really might not be able to return to society. Who knows what damage this has done to her?"

"Let's tell them tomorrow then," she said, reaching for his hand and squeezing it softly. "As for Audrey... I can't hope that she'll forget or maybe even forgive but if there can be some sort of peace without retribution... It's a remote shot, I know, but let's aim for that. Lily might know what she's doing but she's hardly thinking like she usually would. She's not a murderess."

She nodded and leaned in to brush her lips against Harry's. "That sounds good. Let's go to bed. You look dead on your feet, love."

Harry nodded. "I know," he said. "Either way we'll have to get her out. Only then will we know how much is her and how much is the spell - and if there is anything to be done."

He nodded as Ginny went on, squeezing her hand. "We'll give her some time to mourn, offer our support and condolences, and when the time is right we see what we can agree on." He kissed Ginny's head. "Of course she's not. Not our Lily, not our little girl. This, whomever they've turned her into, isn't her. We have to find a way to help her get back to herself."

Pulling her into a hug once more, he nodded, not arguing to his suggestion. He still needed to tell Al but that was for tomorrow, as was everyone else. Now he just wanted to lie close to his wife, feel her body next to his and take comfort in the warmth she spread. Perhaps, with a bit of luck, they'd even manage falling asleep.
