Cadfael leaned against a tree as he waited calmly for the sun to set. He was entirely unconcerned about his nudity as he watched the lowering sun. He had taken his dose of Wolfsbane to ensure that he would be in control tonight and now there was nothing else to do. He always looked forward to these nights. He'd suspected there must be a power and glory involved in being a wolf from his reading as a teen but he'd had no idea of the extent of it until Fenrir had bitten him and given him the gift of lycanthropy.
And tonight would be about Fenrir. His aging mentor had been increasingly grouchy over the last few months and Cadfael wanted to give him something to laugh about, something to revel in. He knew Fenrir missed being able to carrying out such massacres with ease but he seemed to take delight in Cadfael's actions as if he'd been there participating.
Cadfael aburptly pushed himself off the tree and stepped out into the middle of the small clearing he was using. The sun was almost down and it was nearly time for the fun to begin. He watched eagerly as the sun disappeared and the change began. He shuddered and shifted his way through the transformation in silence then the wolf gave himself a good shake. He raised his muzzle to the moon and howled, a hunting call that was answered in the distance by wolf and were alike. None were close enough to concern him though so he took off in a ground-eating lope towards the small house he'd earmarked some time ago for just such a night as this.
He'd learned well from his mentor and as he approacehd the house, he didn't slow down. In fact he sped up, gaining momentum that when he leaped towards the nearest window, carried him right through in a shattering of glass. Cadfael scrabbled to his feet and looked around. He burst through into what looked like a formal parlour but he could hear confused questions from further in the house.
He padded out of the room and into the corridor, arriving there at the same time as a man walked out of another room, presumably the living room from the sounds of tinny laughter that Cadfael assumed was coming from one of those stupid tellyfissions the Muggles seemed to like sitting stodgily in front of. The man simply stared at him for a long moment, apparently baffled by what he saw. Cadfael let him stare for a moment then he lowered his head and growled, low and menacing.
The man's eyes widened and he took an involuntary step backwards. That was all Cadfael needed. He launched himself at the man who had time enough to shout and throw up his arms before Cadfael was on him, bearing him to the ground. Cadfael snapped at the man's arms and hands until he pulled them away with a pained shout then the wolf lunged forwards, his jaws closing around the man's throat. He worried at the man's throat for moment, enjoying the screams and the way the man beat so ineffectively at his sides, then in a sudden, shocking move, he ripped the man's throat out.
The man covulsed underneath him, gurgling and choking for a moment before he gave one last jolt and went still. Cadfael gulped down the chunk of skin and flesh and gristle he'd ripped out and licked his chops.
He turned to look into the living room and saw a woman standing there, staring at him. Her hands were pressed hard over her mouth and her eyes were so wide he could see the whites all around. She seemed unable to process what had just happened in front of her, caught between disbelief and a despairing scream. Cadfael stepped over the man's body and took three paces into the room.
The woman flinched but otherwise didn't move. She was looking him right in the eye and Cadfael could see the exact moment when she realised something was terribly, dreadfully wrong. Could see the exact moment when she realised that somehow, in some way, this was not merely a wild beast in her house but something with an intelligence and cunning equal to any human. Could see the understanding, the confusion, the horror grow in her eyes.
He lived for that moment. He loved knowing that his victims knew they weren't being killed by accident by an animal but were being killed so very deliberately by something that was a hell of a lot smarter than they were.
He snarled and bounded towards the woman. Now she screamed and tried to escape him. But she was so stunned by her sudden revelation and the impossible nature of it that she could do nothing more than stumble over the coffee table and fall to the ground.
Cadfael was on her in an instant but unlike the man, he didn't kill her immediately. There was no one else in the house and he intended to have some fun with this one. So he snapped and snarled at her, his teeth coming perilously close to her face but never quite touching her. She screamed again and the sharp tang of urine filled the air. Cadfael ignored that in favour of backing off just enough to give her room to run. And run she did.
She scuttled away from him, crab-walking on hands and feet, before turning over and scrambling to her feet. He let her take a couple of steps away from him then he lunged forward and ripped out her right hamstring right through her jeans. Her scream was high and ululating, just like a wounded deer and she went down heavily. Cadfael quickly swallowed the chunk of flesh and snapped at her again.
She managed to get to her hands and knees, though her wounded leg dragged behind her, and tried to crawl away from him, sobbing and gasping in her pain and fear. Once again Cadfael let her draw away then he laept at her again, biting at her legs and arse.
She went down and flung herself onto her back, kicking out at him to try to protect herself. One foot caught him in the muzzle and drove him back for a moment. He snarled at the unexpected pain and drove forward past her flailing legs, ripping into her belly with teeth and claws.
Her scream was deafening but cadfael ignored it, plunging his muzzle into the gaping wound he'd created and yanking out her intestines. He backed away with her intestines in his jaws, watching them spool out of the wound. The woman had gone silent again, staring down at exposed innards with shock, pawing at them lightly as though she didn't quite know what to do. Cadfael watched her for a moment then he gave a sharp yank of his head, ripping the length of intestines free of the woman.
She fainted at that point and Cadfael dropped the section of intestines he was holding. He growled angrily and padded over to the woman. He started nipping at her shoulders and face until she came round with a startled gasp which turned into a breathless scream when she saw him so close. He could tell from her breath, from her scent, from the intensity of the bloodscent in the air that she was dying. But he had one more thing he wanted to do before she died.
He shifted around again, waiting until she met his eyes. She seemed incapable of moving as though she was just too stunned by the turn of events and was hoping this was all a terrible nightmare that she would wake up from in a moment. If he'd had a voice, he'd have disabused her of that idea. As he didn't, he had one last horror for her.
He lowered his muzzle to the gaping wound in her stomach and ripped it open a little more. She convulsed underneath him and screamed. Her weakness robbed the scream of its power but she had enough life left in her to see one last thing. To see Cadfael shove his face into her body and rip out her heart. He yanked his head out of her and held the heart up for her to see. The light was laready dimming in her eyes but he fancied that there had been enough life left to acknowledge that one last act.
Cadfael dropped the heart to the floor and anchored it with one paw. He ripped it apart, swallowing down each piece with relish. When he was done, he licked his bloodied chops then raised his head and howled his triumph.
He looked down at the woman indifferently then padded out of the room, heading for the parlour leaving bloody paw prints in his wake. He would go out the same way he'd come in and he felt there was enough of the night left for a little more hunting for Fenrir's amusement and glory.
