Rating/Warnings:
Summary: Remus feels it best, in the interest of Jamie's training, to have a family conference...then he and Regulus are finally going to fly!

Remus had been thinking about his conversation with Dumbledore for the past two days. As far as Remus could tell, an 'inner circle' meant that the Order was going to be divided -- true participants and canon fodder. He couldn't imagine anyone not in that inner circle doing much of anything until they were needed for sheer numbers. They were the people who were not loyal without question, no matter what Dumbledore had said. And if Remus wasn't ruthless enough, how long was it before 'they' decided James Sirius shouldn't be training with him? Everything he'd worked for had been put into question with that conversation because he knew that his place in this war was now irrevocably changed and if he was going to protect the people he cared about, it would have to be even more on his terms.

And he really, really needed a distraction from all of this.

With all of that in mind, he had asked James and Sirius to meet he and Regulus at his quarters that evening -- and to bring a broom he could borrow. They could discuss what this might mean for all of them, the training, any protections or other concerns...and then he was begging Regulus to take him flying after. If he was focused on not falling to his death, he wouldn't be able to think about Dumbledore, Harry, Lily Luna, Snape, any of it.

Remus smiled slightly at the sight of the extra broom -- at Regulus opening the door, as well. Gods, he hated having to do this. Hated the entire fucked up situation. The fact he was even thinking in that language was a sign of how ragged his nerves were getting.

"I'm sorry to have to ask you two to come back here like this," he said apologetically, knowing they were already dealing with too much. Seeing Harry that afternoon had been hard on Remus. How much harder was it on James and Sirius.

Sighing, he waited until they were seated before he sat as well. "I wish I could say I had good news, but I'm afraid I may have created greater complications for all of us."

"You've clearly been spending too much time with Gryffindors if you're going to try and tell me you're fine." He said raising his eyebrow at his brother - which could only mean they were opposite of fine, which considering what was happening with Harry was understandable, but that his brother was also saying he was fine, well that meant it was something more than that.

"I'm starting to think we should just move up here." Sirius commented giving Remus a smile while they sat down, making light even in the face of the whatever news it was Regulus and Remus were getting ready to share with them.

"Because we didn't have enough complications in our lives, I always knew you were an over achiever Moony. So what is it?" He didn't do well with patience, especially knowing the news would not be good.

Regulus chuckled, remembering the discussion from the other night. "What's with you Gryffindors and the word 'fine'? It's not a code word for Slytherins but a polite answer that means little, and does not mean 'I'm pretending to be fine, but need you to comfort me'."

He waited until Remus sat down next to him and put an arm around him. "It's not as bad as he makes it sound. Really. It'll be fine. Remus likes to worry too much."

"Really, I just felt the need to catch up to you and Prongs on causing trouble," Remus retorted with a small smile. He was familiar enough with Sirius' way of dealing with things after all these years not to take offence at the tone.

Although he did roll his eyes even as he leaned in Regulus slightly, pleasantly surprised by the gesture of putting an arm around him in front of others. "Sometimes the worry is for the right reason."

"The short version is that my activity with the Order is most likely about to take a downturn, if I remain in it at all. I'm really not sure what's going to happen with that right now.

"But, I wanted to discuss it with the both of you because I wouldn't put it past Dumbledore to suggest James stop the training he's doing with me and it should be James' decision to make."

Sirius snorted. "It's going to take quite a bit for you to catch up with me and Prongs." He warned his friend with a smirk, considering how often Remus was the one trying to talk them out of many of their schemes rather than helping them plot them.

Despite knowing something not quite good was coming, it was still amusing to see Remus and his brother so close, it was not something he was used to seeing of either of them and it made him smile to see them both happy with that - even if he was still planning on making fun of them forever.

He frowned when Remus told him that he might not remain a member of the Order. "Wait, what do you mean remain in at all? Of course you're going to remain in, why wouldn't you?" they'd all joined together, they'd been members since they left Hogwarts, and he couldn't think of any reason for any of them to have left.

"What happened?" Because of all of them Remus wouldn't talk about possibly leaving the Order, or Dumbledore suggesting James not train with Remus, if something hadn't happened.

He took a look at Remus and decided that the situation would be less volatile if it came from him. "Dumbledore asked Remus to tell him about me. He said that he'd heard about him being in a relationship and wanted a name. Remus refused to."

This was going to be the fun part. "Remus thinks that Severus told him. Severus claims that Dumbledore found out through the portraits and ghosts and then asked him, and that's why he told Dumbledore to ask Remus. Remus isn't very convinced, but I spoke with the Baron and Dumbledore has been asking about everyone, making up for lost time."

He squeezed Remus' hip while he kept his eyes on Sirius and James. "Remus tried to quit after that, but Dumbledore convinced him to stay. The rest about lack of information and James' training is the result of Remus' ability to worry about everything."

Remus was surprised when Regulus brought up Severus. He hadn't been planning to mention that part of things as it really had little to do with the reasons Remus was having second thoughts about the decision to stay with the Order.

And for now, they needed Severus' training for James.

"Stay on a limited basis," Remus clarified. That was the important part. Regulus might not understand, not knowing how the Order worked. But Sirius, he hoped, would understand the ramifications of Remus essentially falling from Dumbledore's grace. And, there were reasons he was the strategist of the Marauders.

"There are organizational changes being contemplated," he told James and Sirius. "Both of you will likely be included in that. Jamie because he needs you, Sirius because he needs Jamie. I will not be, even if I choose to stay."

Brown eyes sought grey as Remus' attention focused on Sirius, Sirius who had lived through 1980 with him and would understand exactly what this could mean if Dumbledore no longer trusted him. "How he heard about Regulus and I is less important than the fact he's found reason to question my loyalty and that's going to change things."

The fact that Remus was questioning his loyalty as well, whether it was warranted any longer, he left unsaid.

Of course Dumbledore would find out, especially now that he was back at the castle - but that should be something Dumbledore wanted, he knew how much Dumbledore had wanted Regulus to join them, though Sirius could see well enough that was something so unlikely to happen, especially now with this news. And he had to wonder what had been going through the Headmaster's mind when he'd tried to force his hand with Remus.

"Do you believe Snape?" Sirius asked his brother, because this was going to be the important part. Snape could clam the sky was purple for all he cared but what really mattered was if Regulus believed him, if he trusted that his friend was telling the truth and hadn't been a part of this.

He swore when Remus started telling him about organizational changes, that just meant bringing in more people, people Dumbledore didn't trust and when you weren't trusted you were expendable. And if Remus wasn't trusted .... "He has to know it would be stupid not to have you though, he wouldn't -" He shook his head, Remus was not just someone you threw away, what had happened at things were so changed. It used to be so easy to follow orders, to be a good soldier - now suddenly things didn't seem so easy.

"Does it matter, Sirius? I can't prove anything either way. He's right. Dumbledore could find out any secret within this castle. Whether Severus helped pointing him in the right direction is irrelevant now." It was only important on a personal level and he would still give Severus the benefit of the doubt.

"He won't," he continued. "I told you, Remus will be fine. He's just worrying to much." Severus had better deliver on his promise, but he supposed that they'd find out soon enough.

"Snape's role in any of this is superfluous." Letting Sirius fixate on the Headmaster was not going to be conducive to much of anything.

Remus raised an eyebrow at Regulus' response, hearing more under those words than even a simple 'fine' would cover. Self-assurance was one thing. This was something else. "We will be fine," he murmured for Regulus' ears only, before addressing Sirius.

"He wants me involved. But, how much will depend on what he decides regarding my loyalties, how much he wants to trust them and what he feels when he does learn Regulus' identity." Remus shrugged. "Your brother may very well be right and I'm worrying too much. Still, he knows now that my priorities are not 'kill at all costs' and that may affect his wishes for Jamie's training. It might not. I honestly don't know.

"But, I wanted to be the one to tell you both what is going on before things changed and you were left wondering what the hell happened." And so they would know enough to start taking their own precautions, even if Remus wasn't saying that part. "For now, I'm still in the Order."

And would remain until he was sure Regulus would be safe from any machinations aimed at Remus regardless. Then, Remus would see where things stood and make more permanent decisions.
