Summary: Lily gets another dose of training

Apparently she'd been 'good'. The elf had brought her breakfast, laid out her clothes for the day, and she'd asked shyly if there was anything that she could have to read. He'd brought her a very old, very dusty book on basic defense, and although she'd read similar books through and through, she sat with it in her lap. It was better than nothing. She'd studied until midmorning when the elf had come back, saying that she was being permitted a walk outside, if she liked.

She liked.

Lily hadn't expected to go alone, but the elf hung behind her, so it was almost like being by herself. She walked the paths in the neglected garden, breaking dead heads off the flowers and poking them into the soil. Maybe they'd bloom when the weather warmed again. Maybe not. It gave her something mindless to do.

And the air was fresh and sweet. Lily didn't tire of the walking, or of the outside, and walked the paths over and over until the elf beckoned. "Lunch, Miss," he said, and she followed him back to her room. Maybe she'd get to eat somewhere else soon, but for now, this suited her. He fetched a tray while she washed her hands, and she ate with the tray on the top of the trunk where she could look out across the grounds.

She hadn't been finished for long when he came for her again. "Mistress says Miss is to come." He led. She followed. Bellatrix waited in the hall where they'd worked before, and Lily felt a rush of anticipation. She was going to learn more...

"Thank you for letting me go outside. It was lovely and cold."

Bella stood waiting in the middle of the Great Hall, forcing a smile on her face as she watched Lily enter. "I'm pleased you enjoyed it," she answered, though of course she'd known she would. It was all very carefully thought out.

"Now are you ready to commit yourself fully? This will not be a pleasant experience. I expect top results, and I'm a demanding teacher. It will hurt."

She looked sternly at the girl. "If you please me, then you'll be rewarded. Be able to go outside more often. Perhaps, in time, even share your meals with me."

Lily didn't have to think about her reply. She'd been thinking all day. About her brothers. How they treated her like a child. Baby. How Albus didn't think she was even grown up enough to manage her body, nevermind anything else. She'd show them...

"Yes," she said firmly. "I'll work hard. I want to learn. I want to be strong, and powerful, like you." Lily drew her wand from her sleeve, holding it between both hands.

She listened, then smiled. The possibility of more time outside, and having meals with Bellatrix were enticing. She didn't mind being alone, but she was sure she'd get lonely after a while, with solitary meals on the trunk in her room. "That would be lovely. Are we to begin now?"

Oh she did have a chip on her shoulder, didn't she? And a usable one at that. Smirking, Bella stepped closer. "Well then, throw me out of your mind."

With that only order she pushed into the girls mind, no gentleness or stealth just full force as she pulled out random memories and pulled them out on display. She'd fallen off her broom and her brother was lecturing her about the dangers of heights. She was told by her father that while it was good of her to take her grandfather's wand she should have broken it too. (now wasn't that an odd conversation to have?) She'd fallen in the back yard and scraped her knee. She was told not to be afraid (of what Bella didn't take the time to examine). Memory after memory pulled out, and so far Lily was doing nothing worth while to push her out.

Lily frowned, both hands gripping her wand as she struggled against the memories that Bellatrix was pulling forward.

See? They treat me like a child. I'm a good chaser...

Just when she thought she had a grip on the memory, a place to push, a way to fight, the image changed and brought forth a new surge of emotion. Irritation. Anger. Frustration.

Throw her out? How?

She pushed and pushed, but felt nothing. No resistance, no effect at all. Albus lecturing her on girl-things. Shut UP!

She took a step back and tripped over the hem of her robes, sitting down hard on the floor, still trying to figure out how to get Bellatrix out of her head.

Shut UP! The first push, the first something, and as the girl sat down on the floor, Bellatrix pulled back. "Your father told you to break your grandfather's wand?" she asked. "And yet compared to your brother's lecture that seemed almost like a normal conversation."

"You feel too much," she told the girl. "You need to be crueller, push away compassion and emotions and hurt. They don't matter. Nothing matters, and when you have no feelings left, then you'll have nothing giving up your memories."

"It wasn't like that," Lily said, sitting for a moment, looking at the floor. "My grandfather came back from the dead, on the Quidditch pitch. He grabbed me and flew off. Thought I was his Lily. I disarmed him. Dad said I should have done more, but later he was glad I hadn't." She wiped a strand of hair off her forehead, then got to her feet.

Push away the emotions? Lily stood silently, looking at her wand on the floor, then bent to pick it up. "Because my father was wrong," she said softly. "And my brother's stupid. And I don't care what he says. It can't hurt me." She clasped her wand in both hands again, then turned back to Bellatrix. "I want to try again."

Bellatrix nearly rolled her eyes. If a man - any man - had tried to take her he would not live. She did allow herself to snort when Lily told her her father was wrong. "Yes he was, very much so. You shouldn't have broken his wand, you should have killed him."

"And your brother is stupid," she agreed. "Now put away your wand, you won't need it. That is now how you push someone out of your mind, you do it by not feeling.

She pushed into the girls mind again, attacking memories at random, using the girls emotions to find weaknesses to be used against her.

Lily pushed her wand into her sleeve, squaring her shoulders and meeting Bellatrix's eyes.

And it was still hard, trying not to get hurt by their teasing, not to be angered by their stupid teenage superiority. What made them think they were so big anyway?

Well, she didn't have to listen to it now. Or put up with their foolishness. Memories flowed as the witch pulled them forth, and Lily tightened her fists, looking past foolish brothers to Bellatrix, then giving as hard a shove as she could.

Get OUT!

Oh a better attempt. A much better attempt. Though there was still too much emotion, too much anger, too much for her to feast on and she was tempted to just stay.

Instead he pulled out, still in control, smiling. "Better," she said softly. "Not good, but better." She would not praise where it did not belong. "You still feel too much," she said. "You replace one feeling for another, which means I still have a way in. When you can block your feelings, then you can lock your mind."

With a flick of her wrist she aimed a hex at the girl, stinging her left arm. Then another doing the same to her right shoulder. "Block it off," she said. "Stop feeling. No anger, no irritation, nothing, just retaliate."

Still feel too much... Block her feelings. Lock her mind.

Lily bit her lip, then yelped softly at the sting of a hex. Her hand fumbled for her wand even as she flinched from another spell.

You're supposed to be teaching me! She jumped again, then her hand tightened around her wand. She is teaching me.

Lily set a shield without thinking, deflecting the next hex, and the playful stinging jinx that she'd exchanged with her cousins shot from the end of her wand in Bellatrix's direction.

	Bella laughed at the jinx hit her, it was impossible not to. A stringing jinx? Really? "You call that a hex, Lily?" she asked, waiting just long enough for Lily to drop the shield before throwing another hex at her, putting more power behind it. "This is a hex," she said, repeating it with spoken incantation. "Retaliate for real next time," she said. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	Lily thought desperately for a second, trying to come up with a more offensive hex, then Bellatrix sent another one her way. And then gave her the incantation. Lily twitched her shield up in time to block the painful spell, then spat the words, as she duplicated the wand movment, sending Bellatrix's spell back at her. Take that. The hex was weaker than her own, of course, but it was the right hex and she was a rather quick study. Good enough. "Now drop the shield and do it again," she said, aiming another - different - hex at the girl this time. This one would hurt more, feel as a burn though it would leave no mark.

"You need to want it. You need to desire hurting me for the pain I'm giving you. You need to relish in it. Now stop playing and hex me!"

Lily dropped the shield obediently, then hissed at the burn of another different hex. She gripped her wand.

Want to hurt her? Oh yeah.

Another hex stung her wrist and Lily turned, putting every bit of her desire to hurt back, to retaliate, to give one better, into the hex as she shouted the word and flung the spell. A glimmer of magic crackled through the air, and she followed it immediately with another, then another.

Oh she was rather good. Not brilliant, but a rather fast learner. In this instance her feelings helped her rather than hurt her and for every spell she threw a little bit of the goodness inside her vanished.

Laughing with pleasure of the game, Bella let the hexes hit. "Adapt," she shouted changing her hexes repeatedly. She'd keep one hex up until Lily could throw it back at her then turn to another, stepping up in intensity and pain with every move. It was still child's play. Nothing fancy, nothing truly hurtful. But soon, soon she'd teach her how to really hurt someone.

"Adapt faster," she shouted.

Lily learned fast. The hexes weren't Unforgiveables, but they were painful if you let them be. Could be painful if you threw them right. She worked on both focus and ignoring, a faint smile playing on her lips as she followed the lead, learning hexes she'd never heard of, sending bright jets of magic across the room.

She followed the pattern of hexes, changing when Bellatrix did, moving slowly across the floor in a wide circle. Another hex. Another. Red, then yellow, then blue.

She turned, changing her hex again, but not following the order they'd used, a simple backwards step to the hex before. Lily smiled at the power she felt in her hand as it erupted from her wand, and she didn't wait to see the result, but threw another in its wake.

Improvisation... now that was new. That was definitely a deviation from the hex that had her under her spell. There was less following and more thinking, acting, in that.

Throwing up a shield, she blocked the last hex, halting her own. "You're learning fast," she said, stepping closer. Of course these were hexes she'd cast since she was a little girl, that she'd been exposed to since before she could walk. Nevertheless, it was dark magic, and while relatively harmless it would eat away at the girl's goodness.

Her breathing was quick and shallow as she moved to stand behind the girl like the day before. Once more a gnome was summoned, once more Bellatrix showed the movement of wand before casting the Cruciatus. She let the gnome scream for a while, before letting go. "Now you try," she told Lily, knowing the girl wouldn't stand a chance. There was no where near enough darkness in here. It would take weeks - possibly longer. Though for every attempt...

She waited for the girl to fail.

Lily stopped, wand still ready, breathing fast and hard, waiting for the next task. The next challenge. The next game. A faint smile appeared at the nearly-praise, unexpected in the midst of orders and challenges.

She breathed deeply once, willing her pulse to slow, and straightened with Bellatrix moved behind her. Her wand followed the movement once, then again, and she focused on the screams of the tiny creature. Willed herself not to care. It was a gnome. Grandpa tossed them over the fence...

Her body was still on edge, exhilarated from the game, and she willed the magic to come from her. "Crucio!" Her hand gripped tightly, so tightly that her wand trembled just a bit, and she pushed harder, striving for the sound the little thing had made...

Gritted her teeth and tried again. And again. And finally, she lowered her wand. "I can't," she whispered. "I... I'm sorry. I've disappointed you..."

The attempt had been real, Bellatrix knew that, just as she'd known the girl would fail. She did not want to hurt the creature, saw now lust in it. Leaning in, she held Lily a little bit closer, brushed up against her back. "You can," she whispered softly in her ear, her breath hot on her neck. "You just need to want it enough." The smile on her face was that of an insane woman, though Lily could not see it from where she was, and Bella remained close, holding contact.

"When you want to cause pain, when your entire being lusts for the sounds of those screams, when you can pour your hatred and cruelty into that spell, then you'll know it's beautiful," she whispered, her left hand trailing down Lily's right arm, until she was covering Lily's hand with her own. "Then, when you're ready to let go of everything you've been taught and just enjoy the power that comes with causing others to beg - then you'll be able to do it."

She took the wand from Lily's hand with her left, moving her wand hand under Lily's. With slow deliberate movement's she moved her wand, Lily's hand above her own. "Crucio," she hissed, closing her eyes at the creature before them screamed with pain, imagining a person in its place.

Lily was prepared for discipline. For Bellatrix to say that she wasn't strong, wasn't trying, wasn't powerful at all, but she didn't. Instead warm breath moved over her skin. A hand slid down her arm.

Lily shivered at the touch, nodding dreamily at the assurance. Her fingers opened to give over her wand, and she rested her open palm on Bellatrix's hand, her fingers curving around the other witch's grip.

She imagined she could feel the prickly crackle of the spell as Bellatrix cast it, and her eyes never left the gnome in front of her. All your hatred. All your cruelty.

To enjoy the power that comes with causing others to beg... Her father had nearly begged. A pleading Lily as she stood over him. She remembered the rush it had given her, and tightened her fingers around Bellatrix's hand.

I will do this...
