"The one I don't come from," Remus chuckled, thinking how best to explain it. "I guess the world of Noblesse Oblige would be the best way to explain how I see the world you come from. From the outside, looking into that world, I think there's the temptation to see the money and the status and stop there.
"But, there's this whole other side to all of that, which I think gets forgotten sometimes. In some ways, I think I'm coming to see that your line and others like it are the keepers of magic in the old sense of the idea protecting something sacred. The rest of us have a part to play in that. Still, the responsibility of it tends to get lost in the way those who weren't born to it view that world. The image becomes something cold and aloof. And, yet, you're not. You're selective about who gets to see the side of you that is warm and caring. And, I like being able to see both sides and coming to understand where the public face that is so often misunderstood by those who don't share your world originates in the private face few get to see."
Ducking his head, he smiled a bit sheepishly. "And that was a bit longer explanation than you probably wanted."
Of course, money couldn't totally be taken out of that equation. "While it may be pocket money to you," and he was very careful to keep his tone from sounding insulting because he really didn't care that Regulus had money and he didn't, not in that way, at least, "for the first time in I couldn't tell you how long, I can get my feet under me without starving or having to rely on charitable friends for a roof over my head or the clothes on my back. And, maybe it isn't taking advantage of you this time. But, what about the next? Or the next? I don't want you to ever have to wonder if I only stay with you because of what you can provide materially. I got enough of those glances from our fellow students at school over my being friends with Sirius and James."
Still, he couldn't help but smile softly at the insistence of buying it as a birthday gift. "If it will make you that happy, however, you can buy it for my birthday."
Taking up Regulus hand, Remus brushed gentle kisses across the knuckles. It was still amazing to him that anyone could feel like that about spending time with him. "Haven't you figured out yet that 'because you want to' is an important enough reason for me? If you want to go up with me the first time, then you will."
