Michael held Wren close, rubbing her back slowly. He hated this, seeing her so upset over this, he was supposed to keep her safe, to show her a world where it was safe to go to school and laugh with her friends, instead she was keeping herself up at night and not eating.
He gathered Wren up into his arms and held her against his chest for a long moment, before he stood up, holding her easily and carrying her to her bed. He laid Wren down, removing her shoes before he pulled the blankets up over her and summoning a chair beside the bed for him to sit in.
He leaned over the small space between the chair and the bed and stroked her hair. "Close your eyes for me, love." His voice was quiet and soothing, and he began to stroke her hair and hum the song he had sung to her when she'd been just a baby.
