RP: The Answer Should be Simple
Who: Astoria, Narcissa, Fell, open to Malfoys, aurors
Where: Malfoy Manor
When: After receiving the owl
Rating/Warnings: Language?
Summary: Astoria disagrees with her mother-in-law's ideas on the matter of Libra's kidnapping
Status: Closed, completed
They hadn't let her see the owl. Not at first. She hadn't seen the finger, but she'd heard that was what was in the box. Lucius had confirmed that the ring was Libra's before they took the box away. They could reattach it, she'd been assured, but that was hardly the biggest concern they were facing at the moment.
Astoria read over the owl, tears welling in her eyes. "I want--"
"No." Narcissa shook her head. "They'll find her."
"Before tomorrow?" Astoria shot back. "Before he ... he touches her? They don't know where she is. They don't know how to find him. They don't know anything. All I have to do --"
"No."
"This isn't about your fucking pride!" Astoria screamed at her. "This is about my child, my baby girl. And this, this monster--"
"Do not raise your voice to me," Narcissa said quietly, but firmly. "We are handling this, Astoria. If you wish to remain involved, I suggest you conduct yourself like your husband's wife." Her grey eyes glittered coldly as she regarded the woman, a Malfoy through marriage and grooming. Her own thoughts flicked back to the war, to Draco, to the way she'd betrayed Voldemort for the sake of her son.
This was different, of course. A petty matter. It would be easy enough to publish that Astoria was stepping down and then rescind it when Libra was home safe with no one the wiser. But there was enough criticism over Astoria's place in the matter of Headmaster that Narcissa didn't want to flip-flop. They'd have to trust that the aurors would find Libra.
Nevermind she knew that was asking the impossible. They had absolutely no leads at all, and no where to begin their search.
But right now, no one save the aurors knew anything was amiss, and Narcissa felt this could remain a family matter. They'd deal with it privately without any media attention. Her eyes flicked to the young auror standing by the door. They had a pair of them in the house at all times now, though it was more of an annoyance than anything else.
Still, the woman was pretending not to hear the conversation, and that would have to be enough.
Astoria shook her head, gazing down at the letter again. She wanted to do something, to somehow save Libra on her own, and her eyes flicked to Narcissa.
She couldn't stop her. She couldn't keep her from going down to the Prophet's office, right now, and demanding they publish her withdrawal.
She couldn't stop her, but she could make her life a living hell. Blue eyes glittered before she turned away. The letter fell from her hand as she exited the room, brushing past the auror as if she weren't there.
Narcissa watched her leave, but she trusted that Astoria was under her thumb enough not to do anything ... foolish. Sighing, she turned to head out of the room as well.
Fell had closed her eyes to keep any emotion from showing while she'd listened to the women argue. She'd never been a fan of the Malfoys, but in that moment, she hated Narcissa more than she could ever recall hating anyone or anything in her life. It was a child they were talking about, Narcissa's granddaughter, and pride was keeping her from saving the girl?
When the Malfoys left, Fell retreated to the fallen paper and picked it up. She duplicated the letter, slipping a copy into her robes. She might get herself fired, but ... really, she didn't care. Setting the original on the table, she moved back to her post in the doorway.
Once her shift was done ... she'd see what Harry thought about this. Off the record.
