Summary: Dale reads a rather interesting job advert and decides to apply.
Dale had been reading the Daily Prophet for jobs without much success. Ben had helped him and he'd circled jobs but none of them really appealed. He didn't want to apply and hear no solely because he was a werewolf and yet he knew that that's what would happen. It was just the way things were and even if it wasn't fair it wasn't something he could change overnight.
Looking at another advert, he paused and read it more carefully. It took a long time - Dale wasn't brilliant at reading with his dyslexia - but he mouthed the words out until he was sure he had gotten them in the right order. Caretaker? At Hogwarts? Hogwarts had been some of the best days of Dale's life and it wouldn't be bad working there; he could do caretaking duties too. Manual labour and DIY; they were things which he could do in his sleep. And unlike previous caretakers, he actually liked children.
But should he apply? Would the Headmaster take one look at his being a werewolf and turn him down straight away?
He thought about it for an hour or so before picking up a piece of parchment. It wouldn't hurt to try.
Dear Headmaster,
I read your advert in the newspaper and saw that you needed a caretaker at Hogwarts. Whilst I don't have any experience taking care of large buildings; I helped get the house I'm living in currently up to scratch and I've worked with my dad doing DIY and muggle contracting for years. I don't believe there's any duties that I wouldn't be able to take care of.
The only thing that I can see being a problem is my being a werewolf. I was turned several months ago and with the recent attack and execution of a werewolf, my employer saw fit to let me go. However I do take the potion and I go to a clinic in Scotland at the full moon, preventing me from hurting anybody. I understand that this is a rather severe problem but I'd rather be honest from the start. I don't see how it could affect how I do my duties save needing the day after the full off to recover.
If you could consider me for the job anyway, I'd be very grateful.
Yours Sincerely,
Dale Smith
He read through the parchment again and again before sending it, even casting a spelling-check charm so that it wouldn't look like it had been written by a five years old. Sending it by owl, he tried not to get his hopes up because as soon as the Headmaster saw he was a werewolf, he wouldn't have a hope in hell.
