No wand. Most of the summer without it. And now another three weeks without it. He knew he wasn't supposed to use it, but without it right now, at least there was magic. For the next three weeks? Nothing. No magic. Living like a bloody Muggle...
He yanked his suitcase from under his bed and threw it on top, zipping it open and staring into it. A month until school started, and most of it spent at camp? Ridiculous... He wasn't even allowed to take his new books, since they were about Potions.
Alex sighed and started putting the clean things his mother had laid out into the suitcase. Jeans and t-shirts. Underwear. Socks and trainers. A zippered bag with soap and shampoo and toothbrush and stuff. Gods. Could the idea of camp be any more wretched?
He pulled a bag out of his drawer, sweets from a Muggle shop, with chewy gummy animals, sour snakes, toffees and sherbet lemon. He pulled out one yellow snake, then dropped the rest of the bag into his case. Sucking on the snake's head as he worked, he added his brush and eyeliner to the zippered bag. Gum.
He tossed in a couple of Muggle adventure stories. Boring, but better than nothing. A notebook and pencils.
Alex perched on the end of the bed, thinking. He had rain-gear zipped into the front of the case. The hat... ugh... that his mother had insisted on, stuffed in there as well. Something to swim in, not that he would...
He glanced out into the hall, then stood and closed the door. Went to the closet and knelt, pulling out a box. The bottle inside was nearly full and he checked the cap, tightening it a bit. It would travel fine, this cure for boredom. He slipped it into a sock, then another, folding the tops over so they looked like all the others, and tucked it into his case among the rest. Nobody would ever know.
Alex zipped the case shut and set it by the door, tossed his light jacket over the top, then headed downstairs to find something to eat.
