"Probably not," Remus chuckled. "If I were sneakier, I'd be able to say that was my plan all along, to test you. But, I'm just not that crafty."
Echoing the sigh, he grasped the other man's shoulder lightly and asked, "What do you want, Regulus? I said both. I'd like for us to be friends, now and in the future. If you're not sure if we're friends just now, that's all right."
Dropping his hand, Remus leaned back against the window frame, though he continued to watch Regulus curiously. "I like you. I like talking to you. You make me think. I still don't know exactly why I trust you beyond gut instinct, but I do."
Looking away, finally, he watched the grounds sightlessly through the window. "I don't mean to be confusing. Yes, I use a mask of friendliness sometimes to keep people at a distance. But, what you see really is what you get with me. It's just a matter of degrees. The more you see, the more you get. You see a lot, which is unusual for me, and maybe it makes me behave oddly because normally it would take me months to be as comfortable with someone."
