Molly laughed, reaching out for James and pulling him into a hug. "Just because you've never been caught doesn't mean you haven't done it, you dear, dear boy. Your Uncle George would attest to that, I'm sure." She stroked his hair, holding him for perhaps a little longer than was necessary, then kissed his forehead.
Her heart couldn't stand another moment of this, not now. Not this child. Not her grandson.
"Now I'm going to go dish up a bit of that custard, and maybe you can manage a bite or so," she whispered. "And I'll make sure there's nobody hungry around here." Molly kissed his forehead again. "I love you, James."
