Straightening some books in the family room, Remus couldn't help thinking how much of a difference a few days could make.
Earlier that week he'd started to think things were looking up and he'd been looking forward to spending Friday evening with his friends, sharing his good news. It was to be like old times, the three of them meeting over drinks to work on some project -- in this case, the updates to their Map. Easy, uncomplicated by the trust issues that had ripped the four of them apart before, far from the concerns of the modern wizarding world they'd been pulled into with it's new war and vicious curses. Good friends, good food, good booze.
Then that afternoon James Sirius came home.
The boys weren't getting better, Remus knew. This wasn't a celebrational homecoming. People were losing hope and preparing for the worst. Worse, there was nothing most of them could do beyond wait for Severus, Bill, and Nott to find a cure. That was likely driving most of them as insane as anything. Remus was sure helpless inactivity was something no one with the surnames Potter, Black, or Lupin had ever suffered easily.
Remus had forgotten he even had news of his own to share when he saw the shadows in Harry's gaze after he brought his son home. Remus wouldn't think 'to die'. He wasn't ready to give up on things yet. And, trying to befriend recalcitrant Potions Masters wasn't the only thing he could be stubborn about.
So, he curbed his own worries by fussing with the bookshelves, waiting for Sirius to arrive and James to join them. They needed the distraction the Map provided, especially Sirius, who'd been living with the curse and the boys day in and day out for weeks. He thought they might all do well to get out of the house for a little while.
But, if neither of his friends wanted to be that far from the ill young man, Remus was fully prepared to make an Ogden's run to Rosmerta's pub, where he once could have begged some on loan until he had the finances to cover it, and bring several bottles back for the three of them to drink in the back garden, where any noise wouldn't bother those inside as much, and pretend they'd gone out.
