"It's been seven years, James." Seven years and he'd never stayed in one place long enough for there to be anyone around to care if he moped. He hadn't wanted to be close to anyone again, not when he'd lost literally everyone in one stupid, stupid war.
"And I am happy that Lily's back." He smirked softly and took another bite out of his sandwich. "But if I was as happy as you, I'd think you'd be wanting to hex my bits off."
He really didn't know what was wrong with him that morning.
No, that was a lie, even in his own head.
Remus knew. As much as he was glad Lily was back, it was another piece on the board, taking up positions precisely where they'd all been forty-some years ago. Everything was lining up exactly as it had been before with the secrets and missions. They'd played this round and lost. What was going to make this time different?
But, he couldn't say any of that to James because he hadn't made up his mind yet about what to do with Dumbledore's order and he didn't think James really wanted to hear about the seven years they'd been separated and how pathetic Remus' life had been. So, he smiled and said instead...
"Anyway, I have a reputation to maintain as the 'serious' Marauder, you know. Cheering charms won't really work with that."
