Dumbledore didn't rush him, didn't push, didn't say a word, letting James do the thinking, see things from his prospective and history. When the boy finally spoke, he knew that James would say yes, even if they weren't at that point yet, but for once he didn't feel the thrill he got when people agreed with him.
"I know it's hard, very hard, and he might not listen to you, but I think it's something that needs to be done, and not just for the war," he admitted. "This is something that will move through time to hurt you. The hurt and betrayal will linger over your present friendship, and I don't mean just Peter. You can mend it. You can be more than a name, more than the Marauder, but four friends who did everything for each other." He patted James' arm. "There's something good in Peter. He... he saved Harry's life."
