Summary: Harry briefs the werewolf unit on their work, and on the chain of command
Harry walked into the room a few minutes before the meeting, thinking through again what he was going to say and how he was going to do it. Sitting at the head the room, he was doodling in the margin of his papers while people filed in and took their seats. He nodded and smiled and small talked with a few, but not until everyone was in place and seated did he stand up to speak.
For a moment he looked out over the heterogeneous group, wondering how on earth they were going to work together. Then he pictured Dumbledore’s army in front of him, from Neville, then still clumsy and insecure, to Ginny, feisty and confident, Cho, unsure if this was something she really wanted to do, Hermione and Ernie in their determination to learn… If that had worked, surely this would.
“Hello, everyone,” he began, looking out over them and waiting for them to fall silent. The fact that they did immediately was a good sign, he decided. “As I’m sure you’re all aware of, this is a first. While cooperation has existed in the past, it has been temporary – sharing of information, going on individual assignments together… This is, and will be, very different.”
“You all know what we’re here for, to catch the werewolves who are responsible for the many recent attacks, as well as other werewolves who have decided to kill and murder during the full moons. I say decided, because that is what this is. Someone decided not to take the potion and place themselves where humans are – or worse, like this group, they decided to take the potion and then attacks and kills anyway.” He waited for the last part to sink in, sure not everyone in the group knew it yet.
“You’re all from different divisions and departments. Some of you from my own, the Auror division,” he gestured to a few of those Aurors who were present. “Others from the hit-wizard division.” Another general sweep. “And a few of you from the Department of Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, though I dare say you’re from different divisions within the department?” he asked, getting nods in return from those who he was looking at. “Werewolf Support Services,” he looked at Teddy with a small smile. “But also Disposal of Dangerous Creatures?” he asked another one, gaining another nod in return. “Capture unit?” he indicated a couple of more people.
“Regardless of where you come from, from now on the only important part is that you are now all a members of this unit – the Werewolf Task Force. Until this group of werewolves is caught, I want you to forget anything about past loyalties. Once the group – or pack as they refer to themselves – has been caught, you can go back to being what you were, but until then we work as one group – and we think as one group. Only then can we catch these people.”
“So introductions,” he went on. “I dare say many of you know each other already,” he said. “But several of you will be new to each other so I intend to do a brief introduction of all of you,” he continued, starting with Eva Small (Auror division, your second in command after me, Animagus in the form of a falcon so she’ll have a good chance of following this group unnoticed should that be necessary, worked the last crime scene…), around the room to Callahan Keitch (Hit-wizard division, almost twenty years of experiences and knowledge of Muggle weaponry…), Jasper Newton (Hit wizard, werewolf…), Ted Lupin (Werewolf Support Services, has been helping us to clear those registered with the Ministry of suspicion, Wolf animagus) to finally James Potter (Auror trainee, Wolf animagus, worked the last crime scene) and Dylan Vaisey (Auror trainee, Dog animagus, also worked the last crime scene) – once he was finished, the only one he hadn’t introduced was Ronan.
“As you may notice, there is someone I haven't introduced yet, someone which none of you will have seen around the Ministry before: Ronan Derrick. Mr. Derrick comes from the Dutch Auror department and has been tracking this particular group of werewolves for the past five years as it moves from country to country, ever since they attacked and turned him. No one in this room would have more experience with this particular group than he has, and I am most grateful that he has offered us his services.”
“On Thursday of last week, Mr. Derrick was officially instated as an Auror in Britain, retaining the rank of Senior Auror he held with the Dutch Auror forces. He will, due to his vast experiences with this group be your third in command, after me and Ms. Small.” He waited for a moment, watching the group, trying to spot where trouble might come from.
“I urge each and every one of you to draw benefit from Mr. Derrick’s vast experience, as I have no doubt in my mind that it will help us catch this group. Or kill, should that be necessary,” he added.
“Moving on to the subject of killing, you all know that the Ministry has authorised you to use the killing curse against werewolves if they are attacking you or someone else. I cannot stress the last part enough. I do not want this to turn into a werewolf attack unit, it’s not its purpose, nor do I think some of you would continue to work on this if it was. We want to capture – if possible – those who kill and murder and attack. I also do not want this group to simply pick up and leave because life got dangerous again. I want the entire group caught – if that means letting one slip away for the time being in order to track it, then so be it. But when we finish here that entire group will have been caught or killed. Obviously the full moon is more critical than other times, so be careful, and if it stands between you or them, don’t hesitate as it might cost you your life. What I’m asking you to do is to use your judgement. Do not use unnecessary force, but don’t put yourself in danger either. It’s a balancing act, one we need to learn quickly.” He waited for a moment, then smiled.
“Ms Small and Mr Derrick, I am sure, will inform you in more detail about the strategies they are working on as well on a detailed description of the group or pack in question. If you by the end of their briefing don’t know what assignment to work with, seek up Ms Small. She knows what needs to be done. The full moon is just around the corner, and when it arrives, we need to be ready. We can count only on one thing – there will be attacks, the question is if we’ll have a chance to stop them.” Somehow he doubted that, though he hoped it would lead them closer at least. They were watching those rumoured to arrange for the potion illegally, and with any luck that would give them information they needed.
“With that, ladies and gentlemen, I intend to leave you. Ted, could I have a word in my office once Ms Small and Mr Derrick are finished?” he asked. “To the rest of you, good luck. Any questions can be directed at Ms Small or Mr Derrick. If you need my answer to anything, I trust you all know where my office is. Memos work as well.” He nodded to the people present, then left the room and heading for his office, getting to work while waiting for Teddy to arrive.
