James didn't point out that he'd get back up and then engage the werewolves to protect someone. He wouldn't leave anyone to be maimed and killed, and orders or not, he'd do the same with Voldemort.
"Besides, that's not what you said. You said you don't want me near him ever, no matter the situation," he said. "What happens if they ask me to go with them? Are you telling everyone not to call on me if it becomes necessary? Are you really going to stop me from doing what I'm supposed to?"
