The sun was almost ready to set over the forbidden forest when Natasha reached the edges of the village. She had not been here in years, and was a bit apprehensive at the thought of people around her again. Still, she couldn’t not be here, not now, not when so much was happening right here.
It was the papers which had pulled her here. A murder, the dead coming back to life – it drew her like fire drew a moth. It was impossible to stay away. Especially since she’d lost the trail of the pack she’d been tracking and picked up a new track. A new old track even.
She’d tracked this one before, she knew, but he was skilled at keeping himself hidden and she’d been thrown off his track more than once. He was alone, and strong, though young. He also moved in the wizarding world, and given the pull of death and murder, now so was she.
She was wearing simple robes, of good quality fabric but plain and subdued, without anything that might be recognisable. She did not want to be remembered, she did not want to stand out. If she did not stand out people would forget her, and that was exactly what she wanted. To stay as dead to the world as she had been since she set her grandparents’ house on fire, with three bodies inside. She’d been careful to check the papers, but no one had suspected anything.
Three dead in tragic fire. There had been no suspicions that the third wasn’t her.
It had worked so well in fact, that she’d used it again and again over the years. With Muggles it was so easy, they could not explain a magical fire and always made it out to be an accident. With wizards, such as the family now burned to a crisp in a remote cottage – or what had been a remote cottage – on the other side of the forbidden forest, it was harder. She even had to keep from torturing them before hand. It was such a shame that she could not enjoy the murder, but for now she needed to stay low – and to attain her robes without drawing attention to herself.
Still, it would have been good to hear their screams, but the petrifying spell allowed for no sound. They’d laid there, terrified, in their beds while she showered and dressed and packed their robes in their suitcase and put their gold in their – now her – pouch. They’d been even more terrified when she’d let lose the Ashwinder in their home, and she knew they would have screamed when the flames rose higher and higher, burning them alive… It was such a shame she could not have heard them scream.
This time though, she needed to be patient. One killer was close to Hogwarts – or had at least been. Dead were coming back to life. A werewolf was just beyond her reach and would not be so for much longer. These were good times – and Natasha needed to move in the Wizarding world to enjoy them.
She took a deep breath, and stepped into the streets of Hogsmeade.
