The cave was dark, but the chill Regulus was feeling went past the natural cold of the underground cavern. He knew he was going to die. He wasn't a Gryffindor. He didn't want to save the world because of some noble reason, but he could not let the wizarding world succumb at the hands of a filthy half-blood who was methodically killing purebloods in his quest for immortality. Pure-bloods were the ones to keep their society alive and letting the Dark Lord survive would destroy them all. If only he could trust Sirius and his people. Regulus would have happily watched them die, unfortunately he couldn't trust anyone.
He stared at the locket buried under the green potion. He knew what he was supposed to do; he did, but he also didn't want to die. With a heavy heart, he began drinking. One spoon, then a second, a third, the pain was ripping him apart. He wanted to die, but he coudln't stop. Not yet. He kept drinking until Kreacher reached the bottom of the basin and exchanged the lockets. One day, hopefully soon, the dark lord would get his message.
Now, it was time to let Kreacher go. He went to the lake, and he began to drink. The army of Inferi came to life, dragging him down. His lungs felt like burning and then-
Everything went blank, and then Regulus woke up on the floor. He stood up quickly and look around. The Slytherin common room? It couldn't be, and yet he knew this room too well. There were students screaming around him, and then two men were talking to him, one was an Auror and a Hit Wizard. Regulus didn't know why they were there, and didn't care. "I've been poisoned," he said over their questions. "I need to get to St. Mungo's."
The two men looked at each other and then at Regulus. Maybe, it was his tone, or the fact that all of his clothes were wet, or maybe his paleness, but something convinced them and soon they were escorting him out of the school and they Apparated him to St. Mungo's. The pain was getting stronger. His body temperature was raising while dark memories of his childhood left him disoriented, only the steady weight of the Hit Wizard was keeping him up. He stopped paying attention to what was happening around him until he was on a bed and a Healer - a very gorgeous healer was asking him questions.
"It's..." He reached out and gripped the man's arm as the pain shot through him. "Emerald potions, glows phosphorescently... Drink of Despair," he said, hoping that the Healer knew what he was talking about.
