There wasn't much to do, really. People were grumbling, stuck in the common rooms with nowhere to go, and the knowledge that there were Aurors everywhere. A student had died.
Alex could only vaguely picture the boy, a little blondish Gryffindor dwarfed by the sorting hat, and then lost in a sea of students after the sorting.
How could someone have done this? How did they get into the school?
He fully expected his mother to come strolling in any moment, hysterical or worse, with withdrawal paperwork in her hands. Or worse even than that, for his father to show up. He knew there wouldn't be anything he could do if they decided to take him and Roxanne out of school, but the Headmaster had said classes would start back tomorrow. Surely Aurors and the Headmaster could sort things, right?
He pulled a chewy frog from one pocket, then stretched across the table for his Charms book. There was still an essay to write, after all, and if worse came to worst, he could go upstairs for that can of peanuts. He was still a handful of pearls short of what he'd need, and there were still holes to charm, and string to wax. Yeah, there was plenty to do.
He flipped the book open and pulled out a sheet of parchment, setting the charmed one aside where he could see it, just in case.
