After a very long evening having been too much Auror and too little parent, Harry and James went to Gryffindor tower to speak to Lily. Ginny was already there when they arrived, and after hugging his daughter long and hard (too long for her liking – Dad, you’re embarrassing me!) they’ve sat down and talked.
Lily was likely more upset than she let on, and she didn’t exactly sound all that believable when she protested her parents’ attention, which was good because Harry wasn’t about to back off anyway. Eventually though, they were forced to leave her to sleep, and James declared that he needed to go back home for the same thing.
Harry, however, knew he’d get no rest even if he did return home. It was hard enough in the empty house on normal nights – the bed feeling too large and too cold and too empty without Ginny – but after tonight he knew it would be hopeless.
“Would you mind terribly if I stayed and talked?” he’d asked, which was why he and Ginny were now in her quarters, alone. It was a weird feeling, being in a room that his wife was living in – when she’d lived with him for so long. What he wouldn’t give to have her back home with him right now.
“So how are you feeling?” he asked, stepping closer to her but stopping himself before he got too close. The urge to take her into his arms and just hold her was strong, but he wasn’t sure if that was acceptable any longer.
This was so messed up. They were still family, or weren’t they?
