Having a sister is like having a best friend you can’t get rid of,

Date: 2 January 2000
Time: 09:15am
Location: Warren Estate
Characters: Christopher Warren, Lux Warren
Description: An ode to siblings (Note: Mun does realize she is insane)
Status: Private, In Process.

Crystal blue hues scanned the stables with a fine toothcomb before leaving the old barn behind. Idly brushing the sweat off his forehead, he crossed the lawn to find himself on the dirt path. A faint tired smile graced his lips in the early morning as he headed back to the main house. Like every morning he had chores followed by special lessons. Since the day he could walk, Christopher Warren had been aware of the destiny he was to follow. At an early age his parents had drilled his future in his head. They claimed it was an honor to be in the circle. They told him how lucky it was to be a member, especially when his younger sister Lux could not.

Lucky? To the teenager, all that meant was less time out with his friends and more time cooped up in a house with his family. As a child the idea of magic had been fascinating—who didn’t want to wave a wand and cast a spell? Of course their magic was anything but as there seemed to be more restrictions than benefits. Squinting his eyes from the sun, he could just make out the side door. It was a beautiful day despite the fact that it was still winter, he was able to get away with just a white t-shirt and a thick pair of jeans. His jacket remained slung on his shoulder, as he didn’t seem to care about his health. The weather was unnaturally warm for this time of year, then again he was drawing heat from the tiny crystal around his neck hidden beneath the collar of his shirt.

It didn’t take him long to reach the door as he walked in unannounced. His grandmother would expect him in the kitchen momentarily as today’s lesson would be about herbs. Chris seriously didn’t understand the necessity of herbs, how important could they really be? Crystals were the focal point of a witch’s power; he didn’t need to learn about herbs to do what he needed to do. He could have found a better use of his time.

Not bothering to shower, his feet carried him directly to the large kitchen. Herbs hung everywhere from the walls to the rafters—the smell was overwhelming. From the doorway, he could easily spot the petite nuisance as she was sorting through a pile of herbs with a notebook opened to the side. For all appearance sake, his sister Lux, looked the picture of perfection and yet this little monster was anything but. Without warning he ruffled her hair and laughed.

“Don’t you have anything better to do squirt?”

Despite the annoyance in his tone, there was anything but. With only a two-year gap between them, the siblings had led two very different lives. Glancing over her shoulder, he took the seat right beside her at the island, which stood in the middle of the room.

The smell of lavender filled the room as the midmorning breeze blew in from the open window. While the staff was busy around the house, the kitchen was clear of any disturbance for the day’s lesson. Perched on a stool in the center of the room wearing a pair of fitted jeans and a raspberry-colored v-neck sweater, Lux Warren could be found sorting through various herbs. Like all things in life, the petite twelve-year old was early and everyone else was late. There were few moments in her life when this wasn’t the case.

Tiny fingers brushed across long, sleek leaves as they wrapped around the blade, life the herb for inspection. A sharp edge tickled her nose as she inhaled deeply—lemon scented. The corners of her mouth curled up in a smile. Lemongrass—also known as cymbopogan ciatrus, normally grows in dense clumps in the tropical or subtropical climates. For the practicing witch, lemongrass was ideal for repelling snacks and channeling psychic abilities. And while her grandmother had carefully left out about its good use for channeling lust, Lux knew better than to point that out to the elderly woman. She may have been twelve but the petite brunette knew what lust was. Absently she jotted a few notes down in her marble notebook, beside a hand-drawn replica of the black of lemongrass.

Dropping the herb back into the pile, she picked up a tall wiry, green and purple-hued stem with a large chalky green leaf. Repeating the process, she identified the herb and mentally listed its attributes—sage, salvia officinals, native in coastal areas of southern Europe, great for protection spells. An easy rhythm would follow as she was completely absorbed by her work. Lux hadn’t even realized her brother was standing in the doorway. Before she knew it, his hand came straight down on the top of her head, ruffling the perfectly kept locks of her hair.

“Chris!”

Her voice rose in a half whine-half shout. He was always finding ways to annoy her and yet the siblings were as close as ever. Despite the pique in his voice, Lux easily brushed it off and swatted his hand away.

“Actually showing up for once?”

She shot back as her emerald hues sparkled with mischief. Chris now stood beside her with his elbows resting against the county, hovering over her work.

“I have as much right to be here as you do.”

His eyes rolled to the heavens as he reached for a sprig of lavender, twirling the stem between his index and thumb. Few truly realized that Lux Warren had quite the temper on her. To the outside world, his baby sister was perfection incarnate—straight A’s, lots of friends, and John Irvine clinging to her skirts. Casually he flicked the tiny branch into her hair with a smile.

“I decided that the two of you wouldn’t be able to cope without me.”

Christopher matched her smile with his own before shaking his head.

“Right yes, but you don’t have to. It’s not like you have to know this stuff for the circle.”

His sister could choose to lead a normal life—not like him. His life would revolve around the circle whether or not he wanted it to. Ever since before he could remember, his parents had drilled into him the legacy of the family and the circle. The eldest of six families would come together, one from each generation and bound themselves together as one. It was a great responsibility and honor of course, but there were other things in his life he wanted to focus on.

“You’re already grandma’s favorite, go enjoy the day and stop making me look bad.”

He attempted to guide her off the stool towards the door but he was having no luck. His sister was able to slip out of his hold as she made her way back to her work. The eldest of the Warren siblings knew how much his sister Lux liked to keep him in her ever watchful gaze.

The heat of a flush was beginning to burn across her porcelain cheeks as she refused to dignify her brother's presence. A rather unladylike snort would follow as she shook her head causing the chocolate curls to sway to and fro. Her brother didn't understand--how could he? He was a member of the circle and she could only aspire to a self-practicing witch never reaching her full potential as a witch of the craft. She would still be able to use her inherent gifts but she would never be a part of something larger.

In the twelve year old's mind, she felt as though she was being left out of the party, especially when John Irvine would be allowed to join and she couldn't It wasn't fair! She was a hundred times better than the two of them combined and yet none of that made a difference. Lux was born second and deep down she knew there was nothing that could change that small fact.

"I still want to be here, so stop trying to get rid of me. It's not my fault you're hopeless."

The reprimand in her tone was clear as she was in no mood to deal with his antics. Before she knew it she was being guided off her chair and led towards the door.

"Hey!"

Rosy lips firmed in a pout as she dug her heels into the floor to stop. Pivoting, she quickly turned out of his grasp and stomped back to her chair without looking back.

"I have as much right ot be here as you do. Give it up!"

Her supplies had been scattered as her small hands had tried to grab for some kind of hold. Ignoring him entirely, the little girl went about cleaning her area. Just because she couldn't be part of the circle didn't mean she couldn't aspire to be better than her brother or John.
