Ding Dong
Date: October 13th 2012
Time: 2PM
Location: St. Mary’s
Characters: Ruby Nightintail and Michael Summers
Description: Ruby has been given a group project for her photography class. Her partner is Michael Summers. They are both heading to St. Mary’s to take pictures of church and see how their relationship unfolds.
Status: Private, in progress

Ruby had been in Crescent Cove for a few months and her impression of the place since her arrival was almost the same, she still didn’t like it here. The fact that her twin brother had yet to join her might also be the reason why Ruby hated the place so much. However her adoptive parents kept telling her to wait and Evo would soon be there to join her in Crescent Cove, she just had to wait.

However in the meantime Ruby was place into the local high school where she spent most of her time to herself. She would talk to people here and there but she never went out of her way to get to know anyone. Then in photography class she was given a group project, Ruby was hoping she could work alone but the teacher had other plans. She had placed Ruby with a Michael Summers. That was the first time Ruby even knew he existed in her class for she never paid attention to the guy but he seemed a bit nerdy and strange to Ruby. However she did think he was a little cute once you got past his strangeness but that didn’t make Ruby want to spend more time with him then she had to. That was just how she was since she left her pack in Illinois, she liked to be alone.

Ruby arrived to St. Mary’s where the two agreed to meet for their class’s assignment. Their assignment were churches and what better place than to come to St. Mary’s. Ruby asked her adoptive parents about this place, they said it was the largest church in the county and many people came here to get married so Ruby assumed it had to be beautiful. It was later in October and the leaves were changing colors. Maybe they could be able to get a decent picture if the church wasn’t what Ruby was expecting. Ruby’s adoptive mom brought her to the church; she climbed out the family’s SUV and bid her good.

“I’ll be back in a few hours.” Caroline said as Ruby climbed out of her car. “That should be enough time for the two of you to finish this project. If you get done sooner just call me.” With that she drove away leaving Ruby behind.

Ruby was wearing a dusty pink top that flowed out at the bottom and was cut in the front to show off her stomach but she wore a white tank top under that since the chilly weather was too much to wear the blouse alone. She also had blue jeans on that were ripped at the knees with black leg warmers underneath. She liked to show off some skin but her hate for being cold was much greater. Ruby swung her backpack onto her back and made her way over to the church. She had no idea what time Michael was arriving but that didn’t bother her, she wanted to see the church before he arrived to see what they could possibly take pictures of.

Michael could think of a lot of things he'd rather be doing than a school photography project. It wasn't like he didn't enjoy the class, but his Saturdays were usually spent relaxing. And by relaxing, it usually consisted of training, which was kind of relaxing in a way. He also knew that, probably, he'd like to be hanging out with Ezra instead. They did have a date planned later that day - they had hung out at school and everything since they had met but Michael hadn't decided on anything official until the day prior. He asked Ezra to go on a "real date" and he'd accepted. Understandably, Michael was quite nervous.

And now he was going to be nervous the entire time he was doing this photography project. He tried to put it out of his mind, but your first real date was something of a milestone, and being nearly 18 it was a long overdue one. Plus, it was with a boy - another fact Michael was trying to wrap his head around to understand. He had never thought of himself that way before. Gay. Hah. It was a funny thing to think of, really. He found himself alternatively shaking his head and laughing a little as he walked from the bus stop - which was way too far away, in his opinion - to St. Mary-By-The-Sea, the church they had been assigned for their project. The project was on old churches around Crescent Cove, and they got the oldest by far.

As he walked up, he knew immediately it was old. What really struck him was how creepy it was. Even on a relatively cloudless day, the large church shrouded in a dense fog. It was like walking into a movie or something. He found Maine cold to begin with in comparison to some other places he had lived, and wore a heavy jacket regardless but he felt the chill seeping into his veins anyway. He wasn't entirely sure that it had anything to do with the temperature.

A little ahead of him, he could see who he assumed Ruby to be. He had seen her in class before, but the name-to-face association hadn't been made just yet. Michael, as a general life rule, did not make friends. He moved too frequently for that to really be a thing anyway, so remembering his classmates names had never really been important. He actually had a little slip of paper with her hair color and name so he could at least recognize that much. "Ruby." He said quietly to himself, just to solidify who she was before he actually walked up to her and called her Rebecca or something like that. It took only a few moments to close the gap between them, and he figured in a weird place like this it would be better to call out. Once more, he said her name, only louder this time. "Ruby! Hi, sorry if I'm late, the bus kind of sucked." He was now standing next to her, both of them staring at the huge church. He was somewhat awe-struck.

"Kind of weird huh? I'm Michael, by the way." He held out a hand to her.

Ruby hadn’t been alone for long bur during her wait she took her take to take in the church. It wasn’t a place she’d ever think of getting married in. Many people who had wanted to get married here had to have done it for the history or something because Ruby could not see the appeal to it. Ruby wanted her wedding to be big, expensive and bright, something this place lacked a lot. Ruby was certain they wouldn’t be able to get any nice pictures with all of the fog. Ruby just thought that maybe they should try to show the creepiness of the church but she didn’t want to start taking pictures until Michael arrived, which wasn’t that long of a wait.

Ruby was standing out by the front doors of the church when she heard her name get called out. Turning to the source she had seen that it was indeed her partner for the project Michael. Who else would it have been? Ruby flashed him a huge smile and waved back as Michael joined her in front of the church. When he mentioned the bus being stuck Ruby continued to force her smile. She wanted this to be over soon and hearing about excuses wasn’t going to get this project over quickly.

“That’s fine. It gave me some time to look at the church.” Ruby replied back as she took her backpack off her back and started to dig around for her camera. Once she found it, she threw her bag back onto her back and turned to Michael and shook his hand after he introduced himself.

“I’m Ruby.” She simply said then fell silent. She didn’t know what to say to Michael since she didn’t really know him that well. Ruby decided to bring up the church since that was the main focus and Michael first brought it up after mentioning how weird it was. The church was pretty creepy, Ruby wouldn’t be surprised if it was haunted by ghosts but that would make the visit fun. She loved the supernatural world, it would help remind her of home and maybe make Crescent Cove a little less boring. “Maybe we’ll find some ghosties.” Ruby grinned as she held up her camera and took a picture of the front trying to get the entire church in the photo.

He could tell immediately she seemed a little stand-off ish. He wondered if that's how he had come off to a lot of people before he tried being friendly. He still wasn't actually trying to be friendly but since they had to work on a project together, and since his parents decided they would be staying in Maine for more than a few months, Michael did find himself trying a little harder than he normally would have. There was no return of the handshake but he just let his hand fall without a second thought. Not everyone really liked to shake hands, anyway. Take Monk, for example.

It was hard for him not to snicker a little when she mentioned finding Ghosts. With what Michael knew about the supernatural, that was a highly likely possibility. He looked again at the creepy church and wondered if he should have brought some more weapons on him, just in case. He did have some to begin with... the iron pocket knife, he had a little dagger dipped in silver, and a few other trinkets in his bag he always carried with him. The camera was in there too, and he pulled it out now to try and get started. "Do you mind just... standing at the door for a minute?" She was already there, really, and before getting an answer Michael ran back and took a picture. The fog swooshed around Ruby's legs. It was a nice effect.

He made his way back to her and then looked at the door once more, before finally pushing the ancient thing forward so that it swung inwards, creaking heavily as it did so. Michael instantly felt bad, hoping they weren't disturbing anybody. It looked abandoned, really, but Michael knew that people still went there on Sundays and whatnot but he couldn't imagine it ever being full. It was huge, which he saw quite clearly as he took a few timid steps inside. He clicked pictures here and there. He wasn't really concerned about figuring out what to take pictures of. It was the church... they took pictures of the church. Pews, windows, whatever.

"I wonder if they have those candle things always going. You know, light a candle for something say a prayer..." Michael actually forgot what those were supposed to be for, but he could see the image in his mind pretty clearly. Those would make a nice picture, he thought.

Ruby hide the camera behind her back as Michael went and took a picture of her in front of the church. She tried to give her most natural smile she could muster and as soon as he took the picture Ruby dropped her pose and returned her attention to the church. Michael was the first to open the door and Ruby followed behind him. Ruby closed the door behind her noticing they were made out of a solid oak and were heavier than a normal door to close. Once the door was close there was a limited amount of light in the halls, the only light coming from the windows which were all decorated with some religious scene. Ruby loved looking at the images it projected onto the walls on the other side, looking at how the colors mixed together. However her attention was drawn away from the light when Michael spoke.

“Would be nice if they did. Add some more light into this place.” Ruby replied as she let Michael take all of the pictures. It was a group project and he seemed to be enjoying the picture taking. All Ruby had to do was be there, agree on some pictures to hand in and then she was done with the assignment. She didn’t plan on doing much else unless she found something really interesting to take a picture of. So far she didn’t see anything.

Ruby made her way through the church and headed straight to where they help their sermons. The room was huge, she had been in a few churches in the past but none she had seen could amount to this one. The room was filled with many pews and in the front of the church there were a section where the choir sits and the pastor would stand during their sermons. Ruby made her way to the front of the room taking in all of the glass windows with their decorations casting many colors into the main room. She looked up and seen on the ceiling there were paintings of more religious scenes, the place left her speechless. After making her way inside of the church Ruby could see why people came here. It was a shame the outside didn’t have the same effect as the inside did. “I never would have guess it would look like this inside.” Ruby said she turned to face Michael.

It was definitely surprising. Michael hadn't expected all this when he walked in. The outside was depressing, creepy. Downright frightening, actually. But inside, despite the dim lighting and the generally weird feeling of being in a large, quiet, and completely empty Church, it was kind of beautiful. He took a few moments just to remain by the doorway and take the whole thing in, snapping pictures here and there. He wasn't a very good photographer, but he liked to be a bit of a shutterbug. He had no dreams or aspirations of taking the art form further, but it was fun to do for a while.

"You're definitely right. I wouldn't have thought it was this nice looking from the outside. It's got kind of a warm feeling... despite all the other creepiness about it." The general idea of Churches were kind of weird to Michael. He wasn't deeply religious, though he was very spiritual. He knew quite well that things most people did not believe existed, which is why he did believe in God and all Gods, really, and so many other things. But he didn't follow a practiced religion. He knew exorcisms by heart, but he wasn't Roman Catholic or anything. He was appreciative, not practicing. Michael let out a bit of a sigh. The sight of Crucifixed Jesuses were always kind of disturbing to him.

He had started moving through the pews, his fingers tracing the dust on some of the pews farther in the back. He was slowly getting closer to the front, a picture here, a click and snap there. "It shouldn't take long to get a few good pictures that kind of capture the whole idea of the place. A nice old outside, a big, warmish, quiet inside ready for people to pray and ask for forgiveness et cetera. I think we got it kind of easy with a church so rich in... you know. Oldness." He laughed a little. Just as he was about to step up next to her, he heard a loud noise and jumped. "The fuck was that?"

Michael continued on with his picture taking and Ruby let her camera hang from her neck. She had no interest in lifting the thing and taking pictures but here and there Ruby would stop and take a picture for her own use. She loved the ceiling painting and that was one of the very few pictures she took that day. Ruby was up at the front, where the pastor normally stood and she looked down at the pews where everyone would be sitting. The room was so big Ruby doubted she could make out some of the people’s faces in the very back seat for the room was very long. She also tried to imagine herself standing there talking to what seemed like thousands of people. Even though Ruby loved attention she didn’t know if she wanted that much attention directed towards her.

Then Ruby finally decided that she was ready to go home. She made her way back down to Michael to see if he was satisfied with the images they had when all of a sudden a loud noise echoed throughout the room. It sounded like a distant door was closing. Ruby gave Michael a questioning look and then had a change of him. She didn’t know of anyone else being in the church so maybe it was a ghost. However if it wasn’t and they were being watched by someone in the building Ruby wanted to find out.

“Ghost hunting!” Ruby squealed with delight as she made a beeline right out of the room and into the halls. All she had to do was find a closed door and the culprit would be right behind it. However the only problem in this was the hall had quite a few closed doors and it was hard to tell which one made the noise. Ruby looked behind her to see if Michael had followed.
