To say that it had been a trying time in the lives of the vampires would be an understatement. The Queen was exhausted from trying to keep up appearances. Exhausted from trying to look like she was still the stone that had crumbled under Guillaume's words. Exhausted from everything. She'd been relying on Rafael more and more lately, which didn't seem to bother him much but it bothered her. As Queen, even if only in name at the moment, she needed to be able to rely on herself, not just her progeny. Not just her nest. Her people had to be able to rely on her and she knew she'd made them fear her instead. It was something she needed to fix somehow, but she wasn't sure how to stop until she got to the cause of all this. Until she got to Valerian and his nest. As it was, this evening she was too tired to go out and "hunt". She wanted, instead, to simply spend time at home tonight in the solace that her violin gave her. The dulcet tones that always seemed to calm her when nothing else could. But, as she neared her office, she found that was not to be the case this night. It figured really. It was only a matter of time before Guillaume's new partner in crime tracked her down to talk to her. They'd been friends before and suddenly she'd withdrawn and started calling her by her full name. Or by her title in the army as she'd done Guillaume during their conversation. Even though Guillaume had amended his earlier motives in letting her believe the pair were sleeping together, had pretty adamantly denied it in fact, there was still that hurt that she was closer to him now than Eleanor herself was. "Well, I was wondering when you would show up. You took longer than expected. I'm impressed at your ability to reign yourself in. Or did Guillaume send you to try to talk some sense into me again?" She wouldn't let on that their fight had actually worked. That she'd been killing less and less, even as she was lost on how to go about a new route that would lead her directly to Valerian and his kin. Settling into her favorite chair, the Queen crossed her ankles and folded her hands in her lap as she looked at the young woman that Guillaume had brought to her so many years ago. "So, what can I do for you, Sofia?" |
