Don't say you know me, you don't even know me...
Date: 10/28
Time: Midnight
Location: Royal Nest
Characters: Sofia Martelli, Guillaume d'Anjou
Description: Just call her Grumpy!fia
Status: Private, in progress.

Sofia's lip curled into a snarl, her fangs flashing. "Pay more attention!" she snapped in Avery's ear from behind, thumping the man's boot with her toe. "Shoulder width!" With every step she took behind the line of men, her mind thought back to Louisiana.

She would never posses the patience that her Sire had. But now was not the time for that. "We're at war!" she yelled, coming to a stop and shifting her stance to face them fully. All in line, the men stood at attention, the woman's seriousness even more intimidating than her previous indifference. The unsurity in his eyes earned Avery a smack upside the back of his head.

Her mood had only gotten worse since she and Guillaume had returned from their trip. With each passing day, she had thrown herself more and more into her work, into their work. After seeing him rise, his limbs shaking but functional, all she could think about was how close she was to getting him back.

And how close they both were to being...something more.

Tongue trailing across her fang, her eyes narrowed in judgment of each and every one of these men. "Practice your stance. Your aim. Do. Not. Miss. Or I will shoot you myself and Valerian won't have to get his hands on you." Her finger trailed along the top of the table. What had been filled with his weapons (and her own Wolfgang and Amadeus) not too long ago was now just as speckled with firearms, though none had any sentimental value to the vampire.

"Get to it!" she snapped. And with a glance up to the security camera, Sofia stomped out the room.

He was waiting for her outside of the door, listening to her shout at the vampires to within an inch of their lives. Something that was made all the more impressive by the fact that a fair few of them were significantly older than she was.

Still, he'd learned long ago that Sofia, when she put her mind to something, was not a woman to be messed with.

She stalked out of the room with footsteps that probably sent tremors through Shanghai, and he let her start walking off before he called out.

"Riding them a little hard, aren't you?" He doubted that she'd been able to sense him, necessarily. This close to the heart of the nest, it was difficult to distinguish much in the way of background presence. Eleanor dominated everything, but so did the rest of the seethe, too, bound as they were by blood. Besides, he was never particularly far, and neither was she. As such, their signatures tended to be an omnipresent sensation. It was part of the reason why Sofia got away with sneaking into his room nearly every night for years, without Eleanor ripping her head off.

"A good general never has to raise his voice, you know," he teased, wheeling himself after her.

Her jaw set, teeth grinding against each other in frustration. Mentally scanning over the list of things that she had to do this evening, she was far too distracted to notice him near her. The fact that she missed his presence had her freezing mid-step.

She really fucking hated being back.

Her lips twitched in response, and just as she always did, Sofia replied with snark. "Only until your're better," she pointed out, waiting for him to catch up with her. "Then that particular talent will be refocused." Even now, she was a master of innuendo.

Her gaze finally shifted down to him when he reached her side. Slender fingers outstretched, they ghosted over his shoulder in an accidental brush on their journey to clasp behind her back. "I'm just a Lieutenant," she pointed out, her tone finally losing its initial bite. "I'm not you."

He grunted in response to her words, mask firmly up, as he caught her.

"You're a captain," he said in response, his voice gruff. "I can't lead from the front, so you have to. They look to you for discipline, but don't turn it into fear. Soldiers should want to cover their officers, not look for an excuse to stick a knife in their backs when nobody's looking."

He was only half-pretending to chide her, but the point was serious enough. He'd seen one too many "accidents" both in his mortal and vampiric life to understand the value of keeping the troops on-side. A little fear was healthy - nobody should want to put their foot out of line without worrying it'll be torn off. But in the same way, there had to be understanding and flexibility, within reason.

The nest was not a military organisation, though, despite their tendency toward rank structures and paramilitary activities.

"I'm going to the courtyard, stretch my legs," he said, glancing down at the limbs in question, the comment coloured with a more than a little black humour. "Walk with me?"

Oh, yeah, he was hilarious.

Sofia's face said it all. She was not at all impressed with the thought of being put in charge of anything. "I'm your second, Guill. You are the brains, I'm the firepower." And it would always be so. Having never thought about having to step up and take his place, the concept becoming a reality was a bit more than she could handle easily. Even if he was right there beside her still. "I'm not a leader; I have never been."

But she did have a responsibility to take over while he was temporarily down for the count. "We're in the middle of war. On the front line. They need fear." She, of all people, should know. "Besides," she added with a smirk, "I got special training. None can hold a candle to my capabilities."

That smirk was short-lived, however, and his little comedy routine was met with a smack to the back of his head. "Ha. Ha." she deadpanned...as she fell in step next to his chair.

"What they need is faith," he countered. "Unshakeable, absolute faith in the conviction of their cause. If they're scared, of us or the enemy, they'll never be able to fight effectively. If they have a fanatic's sense of absolute imperative, they'll be the most terrifying thing these piece of merde rogues have ever seen."

He growled at her slap, albeit playfully, as she walked and he rolled toward the central courtyard of the compound. Short-range weapons training would be held in a few hours, but for now, it was mostly quiet. That was the one benefit of being this far out - nobody around to complain about the sound of gunfire that was still reported back in the old nest, despite their very best efforts at soundproofing the firing range.

He was being slightly facetious, when he thought about it. The Queen's Guard were the closest thing to professional soldiers that the vampire nation had, and what were the rogues? Undisciplined rebels, with little more than vim and misguided spirit. But they had belief. The nest? It had been baroque and hedonistic for as long as he could remember, and that was dangerous.

They pushed out into the moonlight, the cold air of the night a pleasant contrast to the warmth of the building. He glanced up, and he could see stars in their dozens above them. Could be worse. He wheeled over to the fountain, and turned, with practised skill, into position so that he could look up at her.

"I know you don't want to lead," he said. "But you have to. And you can. I know you don't necessarily believe in much beyond a few people here, but you have to. And you can. For them. Otherwise we may as well just pack up and leave now."

"One has to have faith in order to inspire it. And my faith falls in but two. One is not of this Earth, and the other found me in the darkness." She need not explain for him to understand precisely to whom she was referring. Her God and her Sire. One just as special to her as the other. And as much as she did care for Rafael, she also was well aware of his ultimate loyalty - even if she could tempt him her direction slightly.

Her teeth flashed in a shark-like grin, smugness etched across her face. "Be lucky I didn't pull out the taser," she countered with a barking laugh, tapping her new favorite toy against her thigh. "But that thing's a conduit and I have a vested interest in what's sitting in all that metal." Perhaps she should have been concerned with what she was saying, and where, but truthfully Sofia couldn't be arsed to care about it.

Following him out to the courtyard, his Progeny remained quiet for a long while, simply listening and looking. Her gaze was cast in the direction of the water, Sofia's own star inked temple visible in his peripheral. She thought about his words, allowed for them to sink in, before she took a seat on the tiled edge and turned her face to his. "Would it really be so bad?" she questioned, her voice so low that not even a firebug could hear. "Just us..."

"I want to ink you again," she decided out of nowhere. "Something that only I get to see."

"She is a god," he murmured. "Of this Earth, but a god, nonetheless."

And she was, in every sense of the word. Creator, destroyer, immortal, capricious and loving in the same breath. No vampire had ever managed the feat that she had, lived for as long as she had.

If that wasn't a god, he didn't know what was.

He looked at her, the way her face was framed by the moonlight, and this close their connection was strong. He saw flashes of that plane ride, of the night they spent in Los Angeles, and considered. Would it? If they left now?

"What would we be," he asked, slowly. "If we did? Would we be who we are now? I'm not wired that way, and neither are you. We stay, and we fight, and once it's over, then and only then do we figure out what we do next."

He smiled at her words, and fished in his pockets for the pack of cigarettes that he kept close these days, fishing one out, and lighting it with a match struck off the arm of his wheelchair. He took a drag, and exhaled slowly, breathing the smoke out into the night sky.

"Something only you can see," he repeated, quietly, and glanced at her. "Any cartoon characters, and I'll use that damn taser on you. But I have been thinking, and I quite like this," he lifted his tattooed arm up, so that the moonlight caught it. "So much so that you can do the other one. If you like."

"To me, only in that she made you." A large part of her agreed with Valerian and his crew. The rage that she displayed in the conference room the night of the confrontation had been enough to confirm that belief. None should be that powerful, and that unstable. Knowing just how dangerously close her words were getting to treason, Sofia bit her tongue, for even the fountains could have ears.

Her head shook, the tips of her fingers dipping down to glide across the cool water. "Whatever we wanted to be. Sire and Progeny. Companions." Lovers. Mates. It was the closest that she would ever get to stating the depth of her feelings. She didn't need rings or vows or even any soft of commitment. She certainly wasn't capable of reciprocating such a thing. But if there was that one special person in the world to make someone complete, hers would be the man sitting in that chair, smoking that cigarette.

Unable to do that which she wished to, Sofia waited for the cigarette to be between his lips. Reaching out, she took it between her own fingertips, the pads of the digits pressing against that which she wanted to kiss. "I'm still convinced you'd be rather fond of a Pikachu, Captain," she murmured. Her stare fixed on his features, she pressed the tips of the same fingers to her own mouth and held them there for a long moment before the cigarette was placed between.

Inhaling deeply, she held her breathe as held out the smoke in return. When another drag was taken, he would discover a thin coating of her blood around the filter - it was a trick she had long ago mastered, and yet now it held a completely different connotation. "You know the answer to that already, G..."

"I don't even know what that is," he said, raising an eyebrow at the overtly innocent, yet entirely flirtatious liberty she was taking with his cigarette. "Sounds like a motorbike."

He took the cigarette back, and inhaled, feeling a jolt through his blood as he tasted Sofia's on the end of it. He glanced up at her, inwardly impressed. To anyone looking on, it would seem as if they were sharing a smoke, discussing something about security policy, or whatever it was that Guillaume and Sofia talked about. The reality was far more intimate.

"Speaking of," he said, inhaling sharply as the blood and nicotine flooded his lungs. "That machine you wanted is available. Only problem is it's into Tokyo, and the man is being... incredibly obstinate. Particularly for someone who's charging so much for so little."

Sofia had been banging on about this motorcycle for years now, some sort of Japanese-Italian fusion thing. He didn't know. Either way, he'd put feelers out, and had finally, finally managed to commission someone to build one. Only they'd apparently never left Japan, and had no plans to do so in the mean time. Some cultural thing about respect - he took the time to build it, you took the time to come and get it (with a briefcase full of cash).

"So, when things are a bit quieter, looks like you and me will be Japan-bound. I have a few things I need to do there in the very near future, anyway."

"Bright yellow one," she snickered, tapping the top of her cheekbone just below the tattoo she was about to reference. "With lightening bolts, just like this." She'd caught the show on one Saturday morning when she hadn't been able to sleep due to his being away. It was stupid, yes, but she wasn't exactly known for her own intelligent endeavors...which suited her just fine.

Only Guill, and perhaps Raphael, knew just how truly clever she could be.

Fingers curling around the edge of the fountain, she stared up at the stars. It was quiet, peaceful even; bizarre considering what was going on outside of the walls of this structure. But she would take what she could get, at least for the time being. She even allowed for a serene smile to curve upon her lips...at least until it was mentioned, and her attention returned to with a jerk of her head.

"Wait. What?! Really?" Oh, she could kiss him, and she almost did too. Leaning forward, her hands had even stretched out in his direction before she realized what she was doing and jerked herself back into her previous spot. Sofia's back was rigid, but there was no mistaking the excitement that radiated from her. "Oh, I could ''vous souffler' right now..." she squealed, squirming in her seat like a child that had just been told she could have a second dessert.

He coughed at her words, mid-drag, the smoke spewing out into a cloud. He glared at the cigarette, and flicked it away. Stupid habit, anyway.

"Yes, well," he said, coughing again. "Try to restrain yourself, bella."

He reached out and took her hand, before giving her a smile, private smile and squeezed it, before letting his hand drop from hers. He often played the long-suffering benefactor, but the truth was, he quite liked spoiling Sofia in this way. Besides, it wasn't like he was hurting for cash. Two hundred-odd years of compound interest tended to accumulate into something quite healthy, not to mention the various other interests that he'd built up in that time. Guillaume was nothing if not adroit when it came to things like that, and he'd recognised the potential early into his life as a vampire.

"So we have this ridiculous Halloween party. And after that, perhaps, we'll need to take a trip. Rafael can hold down the fort I guess, but I might need to bring Khaled in. After we've left."

Sofia was shaking with delight, her mind already filling with so many questions. The overt overture already forgotten, she was focused on the pretty, shiny that would soon be hers. "What color? It'll go top speed, right?! Oh....I cannot wait to hear the sound it makes when it shifts gears. It's not automatic, is it?" Manual was always the way to go...

Head tipping the the side as he hacked, she looked at him curiously. "You okay?" she blinked, her own fingers curling around his and squeezing in return. "Serves you right, really, for getting into that ridiculous habit. If only because it draws attention to your mouth." Sofia's own pursed out, forming a fish face.

The lady vampire nodded in agreement. "Mhm... He looks like a fetus, but I trust him more than anyone else here - present company excluded, of course." The man before her she trusted with even her soul. Khaled, however... "As long as it's after we're gone..." Her heart picked up speed at the mere mention of his name, and this time her body shivered with fear. Even after so long he terrified her even more so than Eleanor.
