I shall tell you about my people. I come from the Fire Nation in West People's Republic of China--that last part is arbitrary, we have been an independent nation for some time. There are four large magical communities, corresponding with four elements. My great-grandfather, Sozai, united the various Fire tribes into a martial state.
We have an affinity for fire. Our philosophy, martial arts, I would even say our way of life revolves around it. The Dragons are a representation of element. They are born in it, they wield it with great skill, and are very powerful. To us, a warrior has reached the pinnacle when he can wield fire for his own, much like the great Dragon. There were others as well, who have tapped their inner magical core and expressed it in such a way. It is difficult, incredibly so. The breath must be exact, and your will power must be unflinching. But once you get there, you end up striving for more power, for challenges. What better challenge than to conquer the ones who are the ultimate warriors of fire?
I suppose it was greed, Ryuuji. Vanity? Whatever it was, warriors sought to hunt the Dragons to prove their prowess. And that is how it is.
