Observers often see more of the game than the players. As an outsider to Hogwarts, everything is strange to you. You see it with clear eyes. Those who grew up within the system, used to its oddities and unfairness -- they can't see the flaws inherent in its form because to them, the flaws are merely part of the structure of the world.
It's a little like being thrown into the ocean suddenly, isn't it? There's still oxygen there. You just can't breathe it in the same way that you would on land and if you try to tell the fish that, they get all confused by the idea that you're having difficulties with something that's so simple for them.
To be called courageous can sometimes incite people to foolishness in an attempt to live up to the name that they have been given, but I agree that there is nothing courageous about picking on those that are weaker, that are lost, or that are alone. A fair fight is one thing; an unequal battle, not chosen by the victim, is different.
