♥ Book #19 :: The single girl's guide to marrying a man, his kids and his ex-wife ♥ [May. 27th, 2008|01:34 pm]

Title: The single girl's guide to marrying a man, his kids and his ex-wife
Author: Sally Bjornsen
Copyright date: 2005
Publisher: New American Library
How many pages: 233 pgs
How long it took me to read: 1 day
Category: Self-help
I learned about this book from: stumbling on it at the library

This book was purchased at: it wasn't. I borrowed it from the library.
This book is: horrible.
Other books by these authors: I am really hoping that she didn't write anything else.
Favorite characters: n/a
When and Where the story takes place: n/a
Plot in a nutshell: This is a book that is supposed to be helpful to women about to or are step moms.
Main characters: n/a
What I liked best: She tried.
What I liked least: I found the woman to be a bitch and the things she suggested, she should have known from the beginning.

Overall rating: From square one you can tell that she was a spoiled, rich bitch that you just want to punch. She said something "witty" to her step son and he tripped her. So she yelled at him in public. That just makes her look silly. Also, the things she mentioned, she should've known when she got into her "mess" in the first place! She sounded like she was annoyed at the thought of having the kids over on the weekends.

There was one thing she did make me worry about. The bio-mom club. It's where all the mom's who actually birth their children will shun the step moms because they aren't the real mom...well, she has NOTHING on me. I am a 25 year old soon to be step mom to a 15 year old! People of authority - let alone bio mom's are going to not take me seriously.

Whatever, my step daughter loves me and we get along better than I have ever got along with my parents or siblings. Maybe I'm just lucky. By the by, this book sucked. Don't get it.

This book was purchased at: it wasn't. I borrowed it from the library.
This book is: how I wish my life was
Other books by these authors: Drama Queen, Watching you watching me, Terminal chic, Love in cyberia, Hollywood Bliss books.
Favorite characters: Hollywood Bliss, Shug and Kandhi
When and Where the story takes place: New York, Los Angeles, Rome, Kandhiki
Plot in a nutshell: Hollywood Bliss is Kandhi's (a huge popstar) daughter. This journal follows her travels during a busy time in her Mom's life.
Main characters: Hollywood Bliss Winterman, Kandhi, Oliver, Shug
What I liked best: Her Mom's real name is Candice. Although it's not spelt the same way, I have never read a book about someone with my name before. Go team Candypants!
What I liked least: I haven't read the first book - because I didn't know there was one - and I kind of got lost in some bits because of it.

Overall rating: It helped subside my wishes to be famous for just a little...now I want to be more than before. :P

Title: It Girl
Author: Cecily von Ziegesar
Copyright date: November 2005
Publisher: Little, Brown
How many pages: 265 pgs
How long it took me to read: 14 days
Category: Fiction
I learned about this book from: reading Gossip girl - it's a spin off.

This book was purchased at: Coles
This book is: quite something.
Other books by these authors: Gossip girl series
Favorite characters: Jenny, Callie, Brett, Easy, and Brandon
When and Where the story takes place: Waverly boarding school
Plot in a nutshell: Little Jenny Humphrey from the Gossip girl series goes off to boarding school where she will fight to become the It girl.
Main characters: Callie, Brett, Easy, Jenny and Brandon
What I liked best: Jenny's transition.
What I liked least: How the storyline started out just like Gossip girl. A beautiful, popular girl disappears after she makes her best friend's boyfriend cheat with her. The characters are so much like the Gossip girl characters. Callie = Blair Waldorf, Brett = Vanessa Abrams, Easy = Nate Archibald, Heath = Chuck Bass, Tinsley = Serena Van der Woodsen. It was annoying.

Overall rating: It started out weak but by the end, I was gobbling it up!

#5 The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck
I really enjoyed this book! I liked the writing style, and it did everything right--I felt strongly for all of the characters (love or hate) and she was very descriptive throughout the whole thing. It was like being there, except I've never been outside the US. :) An excellent read.

#6 Vampire Hunter D 4: Tale of the Dead Town by Hideyuki Kikuchi
I don't really know what to say about this one. :) It fits well in the series, and throughout the series the characterization of the two main recurring characters remains strong. No nasty surprises. :)

#7 The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
I hate reading books after the movie has already come out because people tend to tell me about the movie. But I really liked this book, and I plan on looking for more of the author's books. A definite must-read for anyone who likes Tudor history!

#8 Cujo by Stephen King
I was, actually, a little disappointed in this one. The inside front cover was just a little misleading (something about stirring up a big evil, and the dog just gets rabies. Rabies aren't a big bad evil.) In its defense though, only Stephen King could turn a dog with rabies into 300+ pages of "oh shit."

#9 Codex by Lev Grossman
I don't know if I liked this book or not. :/ The ending seemed rushed to me, but up until then I actually really enjoyed it. It seemed realistic, despite the fact that it was a fiction book about... a fictional book. A good book to read if you're into books. :D

Book # 7 - Book # 9 [Apr. 4th, 2008|06:55 am]

funsize
The Husband by Dean Koontz - I enjoyed this one quite a bit. The first book I ever read by him actually. It was a real page turner, with quite a bit of surprises in it. I managed to finish it in about two days.

The Prada Paradox by Julie Kenner - I feel that the author wasn't being creative in this installment in the series. In the second book, the main female character was an actress. In this book, the samle thing, the main female character is an actress. In the second book, the main male character's name was Devlin. In this book, the main female character's name was is Devi. Way too similar. I think the author more or less ran out of steam here. I did like the ending, but it took me a long while to get to it as unlike the previous two books, I couldn't read this one all in one setting and had to keep putting it down.

The Romancipation of Maggie Hunter by Jane Sigaloff (Red Dress Ink) - I went out and bought this book in October or November of last year and started reading it then. I just now finished it. It was extremely hard to get through. The chapters dragged on. The characters were boring. The plot was predictible. Don't waste your money on this one

Book #5 and Book #6 [Feb. 12th, 2008|11:32 am]

funsize
Sex and the City by Candace Brushnell
Not as good as the series. I read it cause I was a fan of the series. I got confused as Carrie was a sub character, so I wasn't quite sure WHO was narrating the book.

The Monolo Matrix by Julie Kenner
I quite enjoyed this one. Like the first one, an easy read. I finished it in two nights. Unlike the first one in the trilogoy, instead of using math and logic, the clues were Broadway Plays, which I found interesting. Enjoyable little book, although the characters were a bit too predictible.
