Recently Minister Trimble and myself have had cause to be concerned regarding the security of this department - particularly regarding dealings that the public and press should not be made aware of, both for their security and our own. As a result, the following measures will be put in place to help keep our employees out of harm's way:
As of June 30th, 1979, there will be a gag order placed on every member of the Ministry of Magic, whatever his or her security access.
You are not to speak to anyone about the proceedings that go on within your departments. This means that your wife, son, daughter, loved one, best friend or anyone else you might wish to converse with are not to know anything. All information regarding your employ at the ministry – open, closed or otherwise – is to be placed under heavy Ministry wards if you write about it in your journal.
In order to make sure that this order is not violated you are contractually required to report to Mafalda Hopkirk within the next 48 hours in order to have your journal tagged. The tag will examine all future entries so we can be sure that all information stays within the department. Refusal to comply will result in a written reprimand, filed on your permanent record and if it is not rectified within 10 days you will subsequently be dismissed.
Those who break this order in the future will be dealt with in a similar way. One offense and you will receive a written reprimand, and a second offense you will also subsequently be dismissed, no exceptions.
Although this might seem excessive, this is a matter of national security. We are currently living in a troubled political climate and information that could potentially cause the Ministry to fall rests within our minds and within these walls. We, as members of the Ministry of Magic of Great Britain and Ireland, are required to uphold a standard of honour and not allow this information to fall into the wrong hands.
There are people counting on us to do the right thing, and although I can understand the need to speak to someone about this, you do not know who you can trust. I urge you to visit one of our qualified therapists if you need to talk, as they are cleared to the appropriate security level.
But I stress; from now on people outside of the Ministry are not to know about the inner workings of any of its departments.
Sincerely,
Bartemius Crouch
Head
Department of Magical Law Enforcement
Ministry of Magic of Great Britain and Ireland
