Dear Miss Bones,
In light of the recent Ministry decision to impose an 8pm curfew on the population, I am writing to enquire as to what provision the Ministry has made to compensate and protect those whose livelihoods are likely to disappear as a result. My own business, a pub in Hogsmeade, relies on patrons that by and large come to the pub after 8pm and who are unlikely to do so before that time due to various factors. Your new curfew is likely to drive me out of business within a month. If I have no income, I cannot operate my business, pay my employees or pay my taxes. In a word, I shall be destitute and this after spending over forty years building up and running my business.
Given that it is the Ministry who will be the cause of this, I feel it is the Ministry who must either compensate me for my loss of income or provide some alternative form of income. Failure to do this implies that the Ministry does not care about its people and whether they are able to keep a roof over their head and food on their table. It raises within me fears of a Ministry that is in grave danger of becoming nothing more than a tyrant. I have lived through wars before, Miss Bones, and a government must take care that they do not do more damage to the people than the enemy does.
I would be the first to admit that a curfew may well make the job of the Aurors easier but should that come at the expense of the livelihoods of tax-paying citizens? And will such a move truly stop the actions of the terrorists calling themselves Death Eaters or will it merely inconvenience the general population for no great return other than dissatisfaction with the Ministry?
I await your reply with interest.
Yours sincerely,
Aberforth Dumbledore
