Quibbler: Evening Edition - 17 July 1980
by Carlotta Pinkstone Lodging in Ministry Safehouses is absolutely horrendous for witches and wizards of Muggle birth, Concerned Citizens for the Truth spokesperson Justine Malkin told the Quibbler this afternoon. The Ministry safehouses were set up in 1979 as a response to violence and unrest by terrorist organizations. The housing was managed by the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, providing safe housing for witches and wizards from all backgrounds who wished to be certain that their families and livelihoods would be safe from rogue forces. Many witches and wizards have continued to stay in the houses even as the Government has worked to make the Wizarding World a safer place once again. The Concerned Citizens for the Truth toured the safe houses last week and were appalled at what they saw. Rosanna Slinkhard made these animated comments to the Quibbler regarding her tour. "It's perfectly dreadful," she said with sympathetic eyes. "There are people from all magical backgrounds in those safehouses, but we discovered a huge divide between those of Muggle birth and even halfbloods with Muggle parents and grandparents as opposed to those who have had magical ancestry for so much longer." Slinkhard went on to cite broken fixtures, bad plumbing, rats and other vermin, and crowded places with very little real options for children to play outside. With Hogwarts being closed, the CCT notes that children were playing in the street, and that those central places near the Muggleborn homes were much dirtier and smaller than those near homes with Pure and Full blood witches and wizards. "We're here to bring this to the attention of the government," said CCT founder Rosamond Scroggie. "We want citizens of the wizarding world to be safe and looked after regardless of their birth, and we know the government wants that too. A muggleborn witch herself, Scroggie was appalled at what she saw, and noted that "it's very likely the current government is unaware of these problems. These safehouses were inherited from the previous administrations and we're certain that when Minister Nott hears about these problems, he will make certain actions are taken to clean-up the safehouses." The group plans to present their findings to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and the Ministry early next week and demand that something is done about cleaning up the safehouses and ensuring more equality between the housing conditions. "They might be safe from terrorists," notes Malkin. "But they're hardly safe are they then?" |
