There was a chill in the air and it seemed like the weather knew what was about to take place. A light rain fell, almost like a mist, and Walden shivered involuntarily as he waited across the street from the Edgecombe residence. He wasn't to keen on the idea of busting through the front door and murdering the woman but he really had no choice. The only time she was away from spying eyes was at home and so that was where she would have to be killed.
Walden had been under the impression that she was a single woman. The late hours and take-out dinners had been his clues but he had been quick to assume. Upon arrival he had found that Nicolette Edgecombe was married to a man that seemed to keep the same strange hours, hence the prepared meals so late at night. It looked like he picked the wrong Ministry official to settle down with.
He looked up and down the street a few times and then brought his hand from behind his back. He slipped the mask over his face and pulled his wand from his robes, squaring his shoulders and mentally preparing for what was about to happen. He was feeling a bit tired and his creativity seemed to be non-existent so he had already planned to get in and get out. He was aiming for a record time of ten minutes, barring any setbacks. He really hated setbacks.
After a few more moments of mental complaints he crossed the road and slipped around to the back of the small house. He tripped over a garden hose that had been left unraveled and he kicked the rubber tubing in a silent fit. He hoped this wasn't an indication of how the rest of his evening was going to be. He was not in the mood for complications.
He peered through the window of the back door and found that the kitchen was empty. The window over the sink was open to let in the cool night breeze and he could hear the couple chattering in what he assumed was the dining room. He took a deep breath, adjusted his wand, and then lifted his free hand to the door knob. The door opened silently and he stepped into the kitchen. Walden moved through the tiled room cautiously with his wand arm at the ready.
He took one more calming breath and then stepped into the dining room with his wand trained on Nicolette.
" Don't even think about moving," he warned, looking towards the husband.
The man who's name Walden didn't know stayed frozen in terror but then it was made clear that Walden's instructions fell on deaf ears. Mr. Edgecombe made a quick movement, possibly for his wand. Walden didn't take the time to find out and he moved his wand quickly. " Avada Kedavra!" Nicolette's scream filled the room and Walden rolled his eyes. He repeated the spell and watched her lifeless body slump from her chair.
He stared at the two sprawled out on the floor and then his eyes traveled around the room. He noted a few pictures on the walls, family portraits and such, and saw that there were also pictures of a very small child. He left the dining room and quickly checked the rest of the house but the little girl was nowhere to be found. He found himself relieved at that. It was one thing to kill the parents but he had to be in a completely different space to kill their children. He'd do it without a problem, it just took a different sort of mental preparation.
Walden returned to the main floor and his attentions turned to the dinner table. The Thai food that was meant to be dinner was still in the styrofoam boxes, waiting to be dished onto the empty plates. Walden shrugged to himself and then grabbed the food and quickly exited the house. It was very possible that someone had heard the screams and so he quickly Apparated away with the satisfaction of a job well done. Two murders and free dinner. The night had turned around just like that.
