Carlotta's afternoon had been perfectly lovely. Conversation with good friends was always something worth spending the time over and it had been too long since she had been given the opportunity to talk of anything much with Victoria. The two had walked about Bath arm in arm, stopping at a tea shoppe for some tea and finally making their way back up towards where Victoria and her husband lived. Carlotta enjoyed the slight breeze that was causing her hair to dance about her face a bit, and the smell of fish and chips from a nearby local made her hungry. Victoria must have sensed her indecision, for she smirked slightly at Carlotta and said: "We just had how many calories in the form of tea, and you now want fish and chips? For someone so wealthy you have remarkably common taste in fried dishes." Carlotta laughed back. "Merlin's beard, Victoria. Fish and chips are common now?" "Fried food wrapped in newspaper?" Victoria raised an eyebrow at her friend. "What would you call it dearest? Main fare at the Savoy?" Carlotta pursed her lips, but she was smiling. "You have me there, I suppose, but it is a classic wouldn't you say?" Victoria shook her head as if to tell Carlotta that she was absolutely mad. It was, of course, no news to Carlotta. Half the Wizarding world thought her mental, and the other half merely amusing. If she could ever have even one person take her seriously, she would feel that she had accomplished a great task. In the meantime, Carlotta was not concerned with being thought mental, or with providing entertainment, she was simply interested in continuing to prove her point, over and over again, and if it meant taking a risk or two, she was well able to take such risks. As they passed a playground, Carlotta looked over at the small children playing on the swings. She turned to Victoria to comment on what a lovely day it was for children to play outside when the cries started filling the air. Both she and Victoria looked over to find two Muggle women running towards a small Muggle girl with blonde pigtails, holding her arm and screaming loudly in what could only be pain. Carlotta was on the move almost as before Victoria could say anything and although she heard her friend call out to her, Carlotta wanted to make certain that the child was all right. If it was merely a scrape, of course, there would be no difficulties, but if it were something more... She reached the child and the two Muggle women, one was obviously the small girl's mother and the other clearly a friend of this woman. "May I?" she asked the women, reaching for the little girl's arm. At closer examination she could see that it was at a slightly funny angle, and the tears streaming down the small girls face were quite real. "Let me see darling," she soothed. "Be a brave girl for me, and can I look..." It was clear to Carlotta that the arm was broken, and with that she knew what she needed to do. Her healing charms were superb, and Carlotta knew it. She could have been a healer, if her parents had thought to push her in that direction, but if she had been a healer, she knew she would not have been an activist, and someone needed to shout the cause to the world. "It's broken," she stated matter of factly to the women, one of whom gasped slightly. "But no worries, I can fix it." The women's stunned expressions as she reached for her wand were not enough to distract Carlotta from her task. After all, it was not the first time she had seen Muggles look surprised at a wand, nor was it likely to be the last. The spell was simple - for Carlotta - and the little girl's arm was healed in a matter of seconds. With the surprised gasps from the women and an amused shaking of her head from Victoria, Carlotta stood up, and waited for the Ministry to arrive. They always did. |
