Gawain was restless, not that it was anything new. He'd read the same paragraph of his book more times than he cared to count and with a defeated sigh he clapped it shut and tossed it onto the chair near the bed. It was a funny world they found themselves in. They were planning a hostage situation. These were the sorts of things he defused when he'd worked for the Ministry and now they were creating the situation he'd been trained to prevent or, in worst case scenarios, deal with. It was one more thing to add to his list of unGawainlike behaviours. The list was getting rather long. He wondered where Kate was at that moment. It would only take him a few moments to find her. They could take a walk down the same path they walked everyday or maybe they could choose another activity though he was running out of creative ideas. Then he grinned. He swung his feet to the floor, reached into the bedside table for his wallet, and then bounced out of their room. Gawain found her easily enough and he sauntered over as he pushed the leather object into his back pocket. "Whatcha doin'?" He asked, tucking his hands behind his back and leaning over her shoulder. "Merlin, Gawain," Kate had jumped as Gawain had come up behind her and she looked back to smile at him, but the smile faded rather quickly as she thought about all of the things that they were up against right now. She had kept her journal open most of the day and while part of her was pleased that people were interrupting their fake Minister's sad story of his burned house, for questions that were at least reasonably truthful, it was easy to wonder what they were doing. When the line of what they were fighting for had been crossed. "I suppose I was just being a little too thoughtful and contemplative," she told him easily, reaching a hand up to place on his cheek and pushing hair back behind his ear. It needed a bit of a trim again, she thought absently - not that anyone in the middle of the wilderness was likely to notice that. "And wondering where you were," she added. "But it seems you are right here, sneaking up on me and frightening me to death, aren't you then?" "I do not sneak. I stealthly saunter and catch you off guard. Two totally seperate things." He noticed her journal open and he felt a twinge of guilt for the idea he'd just had. The world was crumbling and he wanted to take his girlfriend on a date. Then again, what good were they doing just now, sitting around and fretting about past events and the crazy plans ahead of them? If the hostage situation went wonky they would have spent the time prior sitting around the same camp, watching each other. No, his plan was exactly what they needed. He turned his head as she tucked the hair behind his ear and he kissed her palm and smiled. "Care to take a break from what you're doing?" Kate shook her head, but looked quite amused at his defence of what he had been doing. It was true that she enjoyed his sauntering. She enjoyed him quite a bit, and she was so very thankful that if she had to be in the middle of the wilderness, fighting the government in a way she had never expected she would do when she had signed up to be an Auror. But Gawain kept her sane, so she turned around to consider him. "I think I could take a break from what I'm doing - yes," she laughed, reaching for his hand. "In fact, I think I might even welcome a break - particularly if it's a break with you. What did you have in mind?" He gave her a familiar lopsided grin and curled his fingers around hers. A year ago he couldn't have imagined himself in a serious relationship and now he found that he couldn't imagine himself without this woman, and that surprised him in a very good way. "I cannot tell you. I want it to be a secret but trust me when I say it's a very good secret." He glanced around and was glad to see that no one was really paying attention to what was going on. "Go get anything you might need if we were to say, leave camp, and then meet me back here." He gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and nudged her toward their barracks. Kate gave him a pleasant, if somewhat surprised look, and she quickly got to her feet and hurried back to their shared barrack room. She grabbed a purse, some money, quickly glanced over her hair and make-up, and satisfied that she looked presentable under most occasions, she slid her purse over her shoulder and hurried back to find Gawain again. Giving him a brilliant smile, she slid her hand into his. "I think I'm ready to go on whatever adventures you wish to take me on!" And although she was half in jest, she was somehow quite serious as well. She had rather grown to love this man in ways she hadn't anticipated when they'd first gone on their date. Perhaps the war had pushed them together more than they would have otherwise been, but she certainly could not bear the thought of him being injured, or being without him - which made what they were doing even more worrisome than she'd like it to be. "So lead on, Sir Gawain, lead on!" As Kate bounded off Gawain had spotted Kingsley and he'd gone over to the other man, explaining that the two of them were heading off for a bit in order to prevent mental breakdown. If they were not back by that evening Kingsley would be able to sound an alarm. It wasn't long before Kate joined him and he held onto her hand. He led her silently away from the boundaries of camp and once they were away he pulled her close and the couple disappeared with a crack. Moments later they appeared at an Apparating point close to an entrance to Muggle London and the smell of the city filled his nostrils. It was something he'd taken for granted during all his years in the middle of it all. The sounds, smells, and sounds were all so welcoming and he couldn't help but smile. It was like coming home. "I thought we could spend some time in the city doing whatever it is we feel like doing. We'll keep a low profile but I thought you might want to get away for a bit." Kate breathed in the city with a smile on her face. Oh Merlin, it wasn't that she was a city girl precisely, but she had missed this. She had missed the city, the foods, the people, the shops everywhere! She turned and gave Gawain a huge smile and then quickly leaned forward to kiss his lips. "This will be absolutely perfect," she said with a smile. "We can certainly keep a low profile - that isn't that difficult to do with so many Muggles everywhere is it? - but oh, smells, and noise, and people!" She laughed. "What did you have in mind? Although, you know I am perfectly happy just wandering back and forth and back and forth amongst real people with real cobblestones under my feet!" |
