(Note! I'm going to have this set after the fight at the docks, because I realised that remus'll be all post-wolfy sore until about then. idk what day we want to have this though so i will leave it vague) Marlene was definitely still sore from the fight that had happened on Monday night (she was never ever Accioing someone larger than her again, no matter what), but she didn't buy that as an excuse to weasel out of duelling practise with Caradoc and Remus. She'd definitely improved since the month before -- her blasting hexes had gotten much more powerful, and her first instinct in a fight wasn't to throw down her wand and start smacking her attack anymore. Still, if a fight was going to happen, the death eaters weren't going to wait until she felt up to fighting. If they had it their way, they'd get her while she was down to make things easier for themselves. If Marlene had her way, she wasn't going to give them that chance. She kicked her shoes off and dumped her bag near the door of the practise room as she and Remus arrived, holding her wand between her teeth for a moment as she pulled her hair back into a ponytail while waiting for Caradoc to appear, not sure if he was hanging around or if they'd gotten there first. Losing the fourth and fifth finger on his left hand hadn't slowed Caradoc too much; he considered it a badge of honour, something to be proud of -- and thank fuck he was right handed. His hand was wrapped in gauze, he was taking care of himself. Mostly. So he wasn't about to break his date with Remus and Marlene. They surely needed this more than he needed his fingers. He had already been at the safe house, milling about and fixing things as he was wont to do (especially with Meaghan, Kirley and the baby elsewhere ...). So when the wards told him that two people had arrived and were now in the training room, he made his way inside and up the stairs to meet them. Smiles for the both of them as he nodded a greeting and took his wand out of his back pocket. "Ready?" "Ready when you are," Marlene nodded, throwing a glance to Remus to be sure that he was the same. "I appreciate that you didn't start hexing us out of the shadows or anything as a greeting to try to keep us on our toes." Remus was feeling invigorated after success at the docks. Yes, the Death Eaters had shown up -- but they still won, and for the most part, only slightly worse for wear. He was feeling much better since the last full moon, coming out of it with fewer scars than usual -- he wasn't sure if that was due to Damocles' potion or not, but he hoped it was. He hoped it meant that Damocles was on the right track. But now wasn't the time to think about that. "Now you're just giving him some ideas for next time," Remus joked, taking his wand out of his own pocket. "I'm ready, too." " ... I might be tough but I'm not a bastard," Caradoc said, laughter in his voice, while he sized up Remus and Marlene. Their potential - their youth, their drive - already made them formidable opponents. "You have to find something that comes naturally to you - some spell, some offensive or defensive maneuver, that becomes like breathing." "Fire spells," Marlene replied without hesitation, then turned a little bit pink a moment later. Always with the pyromania, Marlene. "Although it might be good to have something for backup, just in case. Like with the boats, the one we were on started sinking, and if a place is filled with water, fire isn't all that effective. Suggestions?" "That's when you use Ascenscio and get your arse out of there in a hurry," Caradoc replied, brow arched at his fire-friendly Marlene. " ... forget fire, when it comes to that. But generally? Fire can be very useful. Bluebell flames, flagrate, etcetera." Taking a step back, he spread his arms wide and grinned. Of course she was going to need more impetus to try and burn him so he looked to Remus and arced his wand in a swift U. "Levicorpus!" Pause. "So use it." Remus had been listening intently to Marlene and Caradoc while trying to think of what came naturally to him. Did he have any spells like that? He supposed his first instincts were always blasting curses and slashing spells -- but he didn't have a chance to dwell on these thoughts for long before, quite suddenly, there was a pull on his ankle and he was swept off his feet into the air by Caradoc's spell. He squeezed his hand shut tighter around his wand to make sure he didn't drop it and, hanging upside down in the air, all Remus could do is roll his eyes a little and mutter, good-naturedly: "Not again." Caradoc was definitely correct -- Marlene did need the extra encouragement to make herself actually cast fire spells at someone who was her friend, who she looked up to. Fire could burn, and scar, and cause all sorts of damage that he might not've been prepared for. However, Marlene was well aware of how Remus felt about that spell, of being hauled up into the air against his will and flung around like a ragdoll, and the sight of him there brought back all sorts of memories of the time that they and Dorcas had been attacked at her flat. Trying to put herself back into that moment, trying not to picture Caradoc as Caradoc but as someone who was actually wanting to do some harm. After quickly casting a cushioning charm on the ground under where Remus was sure to inevitably fall if Caradoc lost concentration on the spell, Marlene whipped around and aimed "INCENDIO" at Caradoc's wand arm (and hoped that she wouldn't catch his wand on fire in the process). It was a good spell. Strong, swift and angry ... Caradoc was ready for her though, dodging the fire spell with a snap of his shoulder, only to aim a short, powerful "Aguamenti! straight at her face. He was quite a bit nicer than any Death Eater would have been, not quite able (despite his thought that training should all but mirror real-time duelling) to follow up that concentration breaker with a choice Unforgivable. Remus was let down onto Marlene's thoughtful cushioning charm as he waited for the both of them, brow arched and wand at the ready for anything they could cook-up together. "You see what people may do to little fire-bugs, yes? Though we are magical, I dare say we still fall victim to the elemental laws. Use what you are given. Fire? Water. Water? ... well, make it snow." Marlene spluttered and coughed in the few moments that the streak of water smacked into her face, using her wand to draw up a shield charm for it to hit instead while pushing her damp hair out back out of her face with her free hand. She should have expected that, especially when he'd told her to throw fire at him. She nodded in as he continued instructing, readying her wand to shoot some snow at him while Remus got to his feet, though hesitated. First of all, water-based magic was not that little girl's strong point, given how... interested she was in firey hexes, and secondly, now Caradoc was expecting it. However, now it was two-on-one. She shot a silent gentle fanning charm towards the water that had built up on the ground towards Caradoc as he spoke, focusing on him instead of the puddle as it slid across the ground nearer to Doc's feet, then cast the same freezing spell on it that she and her siblings used to use when building ice rinks when they were younger. He could have fun trying to keep his footing with that while also dealing with whatever spell Remus threw. |
