Aquila slept, but Veronica did not. She watched him, tears gathering in her eyes as he shifted in his sleep, snoring gently. She had been married to him for over twenty four hours now, and he had not said hardly a word to her. Any words he spoke were curt, cutting, and Veronica had no idea what she had done. She sniffed, and then suddenly panicked, worried that her tears would wake him. Veronica hastily wiped the droplets from her cheeks and turned over in bed. She moved off the bed as quietly as she could. There were no sheets to be disturbed; Aquila had hogged them all. There was a chair at the other side of the room and Veronica climbed into it, sitting with her feet on the padded cushion, her knees pulled against her chest. She pulled the hem of her nightdown down as far as it could go, afraid Aquila would wake up and she her legs, and view them with more distaste. The wedding had come upon her so quickly she hadn't had time to think, to really plan, or to fly. Veronica had hoped Aquila's morose attitude would have lightened after the festivities surrounding their legal union, but she had been mistaken. He had not yelled at her, he had not touched her. Veronica had come to their wedding bed in a beautiful nightgown chosen by her mother. She had been nervous Aquila would be displeased by her muscular legs, always hidden by modest clothing. And, indeed, he had taken one look at her, frowned, and turned his back to her. This was not what her mother had told her to expect at all. The tears fell freely now as she watched Aquila pull the covers tighter over himself. She was responsible to him now, she was dependent on him. She had thought that she would love him by the time they were wedded, or at least shortly after. But now, as she watched him and recalled how surly and detached he had been through the beginning of their honeymoon, she wondered if it would really be possible. Veronica wanted nothing more than to be back at her parent's home, tucking Louis into bed. |
