Yet another Friday night spent doing the Dark Lord's bidding. Ferdinand knew that he had no right to complain, but chasing Mudbloods across the coast was not really number one on his list of Enjoyable Ways to Spend a Friday evening. He almost had to laugh at their foolishness, thinking that they could simply Apparate away from them. But laughter would not particularly intimidate the one that he was forced to capture. Following whoever it was's shadow across the grass, he shouted (knowing that it was futile), "Stop, in the name of the Ministry!" As a warning, he shot a diffindo towards them, to make it very clear that he meant business. Luke Duncan lifted the collar of his coat higher as he made his way closer to the international Apparition point, checking over his shoulder to make sure his wife Louise was following closely. She held their sleepy baby close to her chest, careful to rock him so he wouldn't wake up and cry, giving away their position. The Duncans were sick of this government, this country, this life. As muggle-borns they no longer felt safe, and the decision to leave for the continent -- Switzerland maybe, or Austria -- had been made only that morning. As the shout rang out behind them, Luke swore loudly, pushing Louise out of the path of the spell and pulling out his wand. "We're leaving, and you can't stop us!" he shouted back, backing away further, making sure to keep his wife behind him. If there had been a wall, Ferdinand would have been tempted to stop and bang his head off of it in frustration. But there was no wall, and if he didn't catch the Mudbloods, that would mean he was demoted, he was sure of it. And Ferdinand could not afford to let that happen. He laughed at the idea that they would be able to escape, they were surrounded. "Surrender now and we will treat you fairly," he warned. He didn't particularly want to duel them -- the woman appeared to have a baby, and though it was a filthy, Mudblood baby who likely would be as much trouble as its parents, the idea of harming a child left a bad taste in his mouth. "If you fight, you will be killed." A Blasting Hex soared from his wand towards the man. What did he have to do for them to take him seriously? "I'd rather be killed fighting for my rights than live under the rule of Death Eaters," Luke spat back, his Gryffindor side showing for the first time since his schooldays. He cast a shield charm as soon as he saw the spell leave the other man's wand, but it had been years since he'd practised, and the shield wasn't quite strong enough. He felt his left elbow break, and swore again loudly, before looking over his shoulder, grimacing in pain. "Lou, get yourself and Sammy out of here, I'll join you in a bit." As he sent a Disarming spell towards his attacker, his wife stumbled backwards, worried for the safety of her child but not wanting to leave Luke alone with the Death Eater. Ferdinand had been practicing dueling and fighting for years now, and he had learned from the best of the Dark Lord's Death Eaters. Luke Duncan's attempts were noble, but futile. A Shield Charm was cast as soon as his lips moved to form a spell and the Disarming spell glanced off it effortlessly. "You've clearly been listening to too many vigilantes," he said dryly, closing the space between them with long strides. He sent a Stupefy at the woman so that she wouldn't try to make a break for it while he was dealing with her husband. "We are simply Department of Magical Law Enforcement workers, and you have broken the law." He was beginning to get angry and cast an Incendio in their direction. With her mouth forming an 'O' of surprise, Louise Duncan fell, the stunning spell hitting her in her stomach. With her arms still hugging the baby to her chest, his fall was broken by her body beneath him, but the shock caused him to start crying. As pitiful shrieks ripped through the air, Luke felt his temper rising even further. Dueling would be no good, he didn't even take Defence at NEWT level, so he acted on his instincts. As the Death Eater drew closer, he charged, aiming to tackle his opponent to the ground. But before he could do that, his clothes burst into flames around him. The smell of scorched flesh was soon evident as he rolled on the ground, desperate to put the flames out, his wand lying forgotten a few feet away. Looking up through his mess of hair, all of his courage was gone. "Please have mercy. Please." Normally, the man's pleas would have stirred something in Ferdinand, but he was already irritated enough that, as he pointed his wand directly between the man's eyes, he was wondering if the woman would be aware that her husband was dead in her Stupefied state. "Don't worry, I'm not barbaric enough to murder your mudblood brat. But you just attempted to assault a Ministry official. That and your attempt at escape will earn you a long, long time in Azkaban." He supposed that he should ask for identification. "Your identification card, please?" he asked, with surprising politeness. So, he wasn't dead yet. Maybe there was some speck of humanity in these Ministry officials, deep deep down. Luke didn't have his identification card on him -- both his and Louise's had been left at their home, but the other man didn't know that. "I'll just have to get it out of my pocket, let me stand up," he muttered. Clambering to his feet, he realised his wand was too far away to grab, so he leapt forward again, closing his right hand into a fist and putting as much force behind it as possible. Ferdinand stumbled back, his nose bleeding and stars bursting behind his eyelids as pain erupted in his face. He was lucky enough to keep his balance, throwing out his arm. It took only a moment for him to regain his composure and, on instinct, he raised his wand arm and shouted, "AVADA KEDAVRA!" The familiar and dreaded bright green spell sprang from his wand with surprising quickness, he only hoped his aim was good. Surprised that his blow had hit home, Luke was about to deliver another when the jet of light hit him in the chest. His eyes didn't even have time to widen in shock before his body had hit the floor, his life extinguished in the blink of an eye. "Fuck." Immediately, Ferdinand regretted the instinct to kill, and hoped that his superiors would see it as a strength rather than a weakness. Resisting the urge to kick Luke Duncan's lifeless body, he instead turned his attention to the wife and baby lying motionless on the ground. The child had started to cry, obviously started by the raucous going on around it. Though he didn't have any idea how to comfort it, Ferdinand leaned over and picked it up, placing a Silencing Charm on it so that, though the child whose name he hadn't bothered to learn opened his mouth and wailed, no sound came out. The rest would know what was to be done with it, and if they wanted to kill it... Well, Ferdinand was content to let that up to someone else. Pointing his wand at the motionless bodies of the Muggleborns, one dead, one Stupefied, he levitated them so that he could bring them to the rest of the Death Eaters. |
