Renfred ate the last of his sandwich, finished his tea and tipped the waitress. With half a shred of luck, this would be his last meal in England. His wife was already in Belgium - it was stupid to travel in groups, after all. And tonight, he was going to join. He had to. He loved her. The sun fell in the sky and Renfred folded today's issue of the Prophet. He was happy to be done reading this tripe that passed for news. Just before curfew, he slipped out of the café and walked quickly out of town. He was so close now! Tonight! He could be out of this godforsaken country tonight! Leoben appeared closer to the town, alerted by the alarms. He was unhappy about this. He'd been about to eat dinner. He stayed nearer the shadows as dark descended on the more open country, watching the man - in his late twenties, perhaps? - walk swiftly toward the apparation point. His wand was securely in hand, but for now, he just watched. As he approached the point, his steps quickened, and it was then that Ben acted. "Glassius," he muttered from his spot, several feet away. He'd been training lately and he felt more confident with his wandwork. And poor Renfred never saw it coming. The spell hit his feet and he was frozen solid to the ground. Renfred went for his wand as a dark haired man stepped out of the shadows, his wand already drawn. "I'm afraid the borders are closed," he said as he approached Renfred. His voice was silky smooth and highly apologetic and for a moment, Renfred actually stopped searching through his robes. "But-- but my wife--" he stuttered, resuming his search and finally getting his wand out. "I'll take that, sir," Leoben said calmly, holding his hand out for the man's wand. Renfred suddenly looked angry. "No!" he cried, trying to pull his feet free from the thick layers of ice holding him in place. "No, I'm leaving! Leave me alone! Confrigo!" Ben was ready for this struggle though, and he protected himself with a shield charm, only feeling a few tugs of exasperation. Why must things always be done the hard way? "Imperio!" he snapped. Almost immediately, Renfred stopped his struggle. Ben felt the beginnings of the slightly older man trying to throw his curse off, but he only strengthened it and all resistance stopped. His commands were silent, but a few short minutes later, Renfred had handed over his wand and was sitting calmly on the ground, pulling up bits of grass. Maybe some things could be done without too much of a struggle. |
