At 10:30, the church bells began to ring, and the organ began to play Mozart's Requiem. The double doors opened, and the officiant processed in, followed by a silver casket that had a Ministry of Magic banner draped over it. The casket was carried by FrankLongbottom, Ted Tonks, and Octavius Pepper along the right side, and Sirius Black, Kingsley Shacklebolt, and Grady Bell along the left. Immediately following behind the casket was Elle, dressed appropriately for a funeral, though she did not remove her sunglasses. She was on the arm of Dedalus, and immediately following them were the Minister of Magic and her husband. There was no family that followed them; the family had long fled the country and could not be contacted before the service. Elle, Dedalus, Millicent, and Gulliver all filed into the front row, and once they did, the pall bearers placed the coffin on the stand waiting for it, filed into the row behind them. Two men dressed in black dress robes came up and placed the flowers upon the coffin, as well as a picture on an easel ofAlastor . It wasn't the best picture, in Elle's opinion, but it was the one she had. He didn't look nearly happy enough in it, but she hadn't fretted enough over it. The photograph watched them all with a distinctive look of, 'why are you crying' on his face. The officiant began the service, a simple, elegant, yet appropriate affair. He spoke of Alastor as if he had known him, which was due to the long history Elle had provided them, as well as their discussion the Monday evening before. There was no mention of his condition before he died, though the officiant spoke of his bravery and heroism that preceded him to his death. Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with weary feet, Until it joins some larger way Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say. The Road goes ever on and on Out from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, Let others follow it who can! Let them a journey new begin, But I at last with weary feet Will turn towards the lighted inn, My evening-rest and sleep to meet. Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate; And though I oft have passed them by, A day will come at last when I Shall take the hidden paths that run West of the Moon, East of the Sun." Elle folded the paper, and in a rare moment of weakness, pressed her fingertips to her lips to keep herself from crying. She left the pulpit and went to the casket, taking the fingers from her lips and shakily touching the smooth, cool silver. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath to control her tears, and then turned and returned to the pew next toDedalus. |
