STATUS/RATING:Completed Log
Her workshop was cluttered with bottles of ingredients, empty vials, stir sticks, and various cauldrons. Lily poured the belladonna and watched it change the colour of the potion, and she stirred it slowly with her wand. Clockwise, counter-clockwise. After one month of tending to the potion, it was about to be complete. he had tested her belladonna earlier, before this very last stage, eating only three berries. She pursed her lips and watched for the change in consistency, which would bring it perfection and fill another three tiny vials to add to the one she had left. Taking her quill, she quickly scrawled 'veritaserum' across the labels on the five vials waiting to be filled. It wouldn't do to let this be mistake for anything else. She rolled one of the vials in her hand, sighing as she calculated how long it would be before she managed to finish the veritaserum and the sobriety potion that she promised Meg. And she wanted to cook James something nice for dinner once he got home. Work sucked, and James felt like his head was going to explode if he didn't get out of there as soon as the "Closed" sign magically spun itself around. He was out the door and heading for the nearest apparition point before Mr. Jackson could shout his goodbyes and he was on the front step within minutes. As soon as he stepped inside, Mr. Kittikins (James was holding on to the name for the sheer pleasure of torturing his wife) came running at his feet and he scooped up the kitten, kissing it on top of the head. "Hey love," he called into the house, feeling all the stress drain away. He headed for her workshop when he heard noises coming from that direction. "You've been busy," he laughed, looking around the room at all the progress she'd made since the last time he'd been in here. "You're too pretty to spend all of your time surrounded by these smells," he teased, wrinkling his nose dramatically, even though the room was fine. He mostly said it because for years he'd been telling her he wasn't good at potions because he didn't like the scents. Lily laughed, standing and wrapping an arm around James and giving him a peck on the cheek. "I suppose you'll just have to get used to them," she said. "Or I'll have to take a shower. One option or the other." She squeezed his side but moved back to the cauldron, watching for the change in consistency that would allow her to bottle the potions and be done with them. The potion thinned and stated to shimmer, so Lily began pouring it into the vials, humming softly as she did. "Was work alright?" she asked. He shook his head. "Not at all. Diagon Alley is just shit nowadays. Everyone is on edge, and business has all but dropped off. Mr. Jackson was talking about laying off that new Sheila girl, but if he really means to do it, I may just quit. She's got two kids and needs the money, and it's not as if we do. I was only there so I could keep an eye on things, and now there's nothing left to keep an eye on," he said. He followed her over to the vials and wrapped his arms around her, playfully poking at the empty vials. "I'd rather stay around the house all day to help you with potions," he teased, pretending to pour one empty vial into another. "No," said Lily, a bit concerned for Sheila. "We really don't, and I think that's a good idea." She put the cauldron down and popped the corks into the vials while snuggling herself closer to James, laughing. "But that isn't such a good idea, Potter. Should I really trust you to start messing with these things? You might just try to make the potions smell good, instead of making them turn out right." She held a vial of veritaserum in one hand, and pinched his side with the other. "Open up your mouth and stick out your tongue. You're my guinea pig today." "Just no asking about that time you were on patrols fifth year and caught me and Sirius out of bed in that broom closet," he said with a glimmer of mischief in his eye. "Trust me when I tell you this: You Don't Want To Know." He gave her a naughty wink as he opened his mouth and stuck out his tongue obligingly. He didn't mind testing out the Veritaserum since he trusted that Lily wouldn't poison him and there wasn't everything he ever kept from her. Part of what he loved about their relationship was the honesty aspect of it. Lily laughed and squeezed his side a bit harder, and then tipped a bit of the vial onto his tongue. "Now swallow," she said, moving to put the cork back on. She eyed him carefully. "You know I'm going to have to ask you about that now," she said. "Or you're just a silly boy." She grinned and put the vial down behind her on the table and leaned against it, her hands behind her back, facing him. "Now, James Potter. What is it about me that you love best?" James laughed at the question. He could feel the compulsion to answer, and he was glad this was an easy one. "How I feel when I see you smile," he said, surprised that her eyes wasn't his answer, but there were so many things, his mind must have picked the first one he thought of that was true. "Now open up, love, because you can't honestly think I'm going to let you out of this game," he teased. "Take a sip and then we'll head up to the bedroom and play until we either kill each other or shag," he laughed, leaning forward to kiss her behind her ear. He lingered there as he reached around her and picked up a vial, pulling it away to wave it in her face. "Oh, fine," she said. She took the vial and uncorcked it one handed, the other hand sliding up along his side. She took a swig of it -- more than she had expected to drink, and then corked it, her eyes a bit wide. "That's a very good potion," she said. "I can't taste it at all. I'd like to see anyone guess that's what is in their drink." She put it back on the table and used her other hand to loop around James, laughing a little, her smile a bit wider because he had mentioned how much he liked it. "What are you going to ask me, Potter?" Oh the possibilities... But one question popped into his mind first thing and he decided to go with it. "What was the first time you thought you might be in love with me?" he asked cheekily. This was awfully fun. There weren't many people he'd be willing to do this with, but there was something freeing about playing this game with Lily. Veritaserum would be a very scary thing under most situations, but this was sort of nice. Nice enough to defintely be moved to the bedroom. "Wait, wait-- don't answer yet," he laughed, scooping her up in his arms and carrying her out the door and to their bedroom. He dropped her on the bed and then plopped down next to her, gazing at her with a silly half-grin. "Now you can tell me. When did you first realize you might be in love with me?" he asked. Lily laughed the whole way to the bedroom, her mind shifting through her seventh year. "Halloween," she said, touching his face. "In Hogsmeade. I don't know why just then, but you opened the door for me into the Three Broomsticks and the wind was messing up your hair even more than usual and I just felt my heart start pounding like it never had before. And I knew. I knew before then that I'd probably marry you, but somehow it was different." She grinned at him. "And now the same question from you, toe rag." "You remember that time I was picking on that fat little hufflepuff? Can't even remember his name, but you whipped out your wand and I ended up with my back against the wall and I knew. I knew right then that I was in love and that I'd always be in love. And boy did that put a bee in Sirius's bonnet," he laughed. He leaned up on an elbow only to shift so that he could lay down in the bed properly. He reached up an arm to tug her down next to him. "And by the way, I knew it was my hair that'd get you in the end," he added, with a look of mock I told you so. "Hmmm... And it's my turn for a question... do you mind that I spend a rather large chunk of time with Sirius?" he asked curiously. He'd always wondered and this whole Hestia business had it on his mind. He'd never asked before because he was afraid she might skirt around it in an attempt to keep the peace. He knew she knew how much Sirius meant to him after all. "I couldn't let you know how much I liked it, not when I was determined to hate you for all of eternity." She started running her hands through his hair slowly, taking a deep breath, linking her legs with his. "I don't mind too often," she said. "Sometimes. I wish we had more time for ourselves. I love your mum, and I've always been happy to have her around, but it can get disappointing when I feel like I can't even have a few days with you being the only other person at home. I like to be alone with you." She frowned. She hadn't let herself think how disappointed she could be, but there it was. The truth. "I would never want you to stop spending time with him. I know both of you need each other. And I love Sirius and he's become like a brother to me, but you are my husband. We need time alone, too." She kissed his cheek and her lips lingered there. "And now for another question from me..." She put her hands on his hips, massaging his sides gently. She laughed and pinched him. "Tell me, Potter. Which is better? My tits or arse?" She started laughing, knowing that was actually a bit of a freebie, since she could ask him that question any time. "And for a real question," she said, tugging on one of his ears. "What is it about me that makes you most frustrated, Potter?" "Arse," James said immediately, and he laughed because the Veritserum really did prompt you to speak before you had time to collect your thoughts on a subject. At her next question, he paused, surprised to find that an answer didn't seem to be right on the tip of his mind. He thought about it for a few moments before answering. "I guess it's that you don't seem to care enough about yourself," he said after a minute. "Though it's complicated because that's one of my favorite things about you as well. It causes me all sorts of head-fuckery, too, that I feel like that, so I'm punished enough for it, I assure you," he said, stroking some hair out of her face and tucking it behind her ear. "Merlin, you're beautiful..." He'd meant to ask her another question, but she was too distracting right now. Lily laughed and rolled on top of him, putting his hand on his favourite body part of hers and kissing his neck with little, teasing kisses. She paid close attention when he started to tell her what made him frustrated, and then she stroked his hair and his cheek, letting out a little breath. A part of her wanted to start explaining why it was that she had to think of herself as less for the sake of others, but this wasn't the time. Instead, she kissed his chin and slid a hand under his shirt. "And you, James Potter," she said, "Are incredibly sexy." "I know," he whispered teasingly, placing his other hand behind her head to pull her down into a tender kiss. "But you're sexier, Lily Evans Potter. And that's the truth." It was a few hours later when James woke up, and rolled over to his side, glad to see Lily was still there. "You wore me out," he laughed, kissing her on the cheek. "Did you nap at all, or just lay here in married bliss?" he asked, as he propped himself up on his elbow. "'Course I napped," she mumbled, swatting at him as she woke up, a little smile appearing on her lips. She opened her eyes and, a devilish little grin on her face, pulled at his elbow so that he would fall down, grabbing his hands and then kissing him on the mouth. "I wore you out?" She laughed, feeling more awake now, and then turned to lay on her back. "Potter, we've just dallied away the evening..." Not that she was really complaining. She was more than ready to spend the rest of her life with him, and she didn't need veritaserum to make that clear to her. |
