There were times when Remus thought it was hopeless. How could anyone hold on to such strong happy memories in times like they were in now? So many people dead, so many people afraid to speak out against the Death Eaters for fear of the lives of their loved ones, or for their own lives. It was hard to remember there was still good to be found in the world, especially when one didn't even know if they felt happy at all. But he did sometimes, didn't he? Marlene could always make him smile, even when he was feeling down about himself, she always seemed to have a way of brightening his mood. And then there was, of course, that brief conversation with Beth when she asked him about his lycanthropy -- he had been given so many opportunities, and he had never really thought about how truly lucky he's been. Some werewolves were driven mad by the transformations and the bloodlust; some were hunted down and murdered, some were never given any education at all, and some didn't even have a real home to go back to at the end of the day. But he did. Remus had a home, had a full, proper education at Hogwarts thanks to Dumbledore, and he even had three amazing, generous friends who had gone above and beyond to help him during the nights of the full moon. They had accepted his curse, even if it took some getting used to at first, and discovering his condition seemed to make the group of friends grow even closer. He'd never had friends before Hogwarts, and hadn't expected to make and, fully prepared to face this fact. Yet there was James, Sirius, and Peter, breaking the rules and studying advanced magic in order to become animagi to accompany him during the full moons. They made his life so much easier -- he rarely clawed and bit himself during the nights they were able to be with him, and now he no longer had to make up excuses as to where he went every month. Then there was Marlene. It was difficult to pinpoint the exact moment he started to have feelings for her -- after joining the Order, they had been assigned as patrol partners and so needed to work closely together. Remus had known her in school, of course, but he was never really as close to her as the guys had been. He still had to lie to everyone else in school about his condition, so it was much easier for him to just stick close to James, Sirius, and Peter instead of opening up to other people. Marlene had accepted him too, and didn't appear to be too bothered by his lycanthropy, which always made him feel much more at ease with people. She was outgoing, made him laugh, and was generally fun to be around -- soon enough, Remus found himself really looking forward to their patrol schedules together. She had even helped him get a job, something he never thought he would be lucky enough to have, and even though he could no longer work there now, Remus had enjoyed every moment there. It had taken a lot of courage to finally ask her out, but the more time Remus had spent with her, the more he found that he liked her. All the time that had passed since then felt like it was such a long time ago, and sometimes he still felt surprised to wake up beside her in bed. He really was lucky to have all these things in his life, and despite that they've all lost so much, they were all still here for each other. These were the memories he needed to focus on. He had tried several in the past -- the first day he met the other Marauders, or his first date with Marlene, but none of them were quite powerful enough, none he could hold onto for a longer period of time. What Remus needed was to focus on a collective of thoughts and memories, the ones that made him feel warm and happy. He closed his eyes and concentrated on those thoughts, of his four amazing best friends (even though he was still angry at Sirius for what he has done, but thinking about that would not help him with casting a patronus), of the beautiful girlfriend he was so lucky to wake up next to every morning, how much his parents had cared for him, all the chances he's been given that most werewolves never had -- all the things that made his life worth fighting for, still worth living. No matter how bad things seemed to be, there was still good to be found, and he was lucky not to have to go very far to find it. Remus lifted his wand and opened his eyes again, thinking, focusing on all the memories in his mind, and he shouted, "Expecto Patronum!" A thick, silver smoke burst forth from his wand, and while at first it didn't seem to want to take form, Remus did not let himself falter -- it took a solid shape, with four stocky legs, pointed ears, a thick bushy tail and a long muzzle, gliding across the floor until it found no darkness in the room to stop in front of him. Remus stared at the conjured animal, and the great silvery wolf, having no enemies to defend its master from, stared back. Oh. And as quickly as the wolf had appeared, it vanished into the air. |
