Who: Marius and Mrs. Potter
What: Marius carries out an assignment
Where: Godric's Hollow (The Town) and a clearing in the woods.
When: Evening, August 29
Rating: PG13
That his father had chosen him over all of the other young Death Eaters had Marius happy in a way he had not been in months. And the fall out from this assignment would be felt by so many... he could imagine the journal entries already. He did not know many in that house, but the foolish entries from McKinnon and Lupin had given him knowledge of all its occupants.
Marius had no dislike for Potter other than what Regulus had said, and of course, his blood traitorous ways, but it seemed to be known to all that the Potters had adopted Sirius Black, and for that error they would pay. He needed to learn his place in society, and since harming him would be far too humane, Mrs. Potter would take the fall for his poor manners.
Godric's Hollow, much to the credit of the idiots inside, had nearly fort-like wards, and so Marius spent nearly an hour tossing plans about in his head of ways to get the old woman out of the house alone. Surely she'd been told of the dangers lurking outside, so Marius had to think of something that would bring her out quickly, and something that would require privacy.
Mothers, French or English, were not so different, and to Marius's mind, he could think of only one thing that would cause his own grand-mere to make such an error in judgement... protecting him. It would not matter if it was physical protection or emotional protection, his grandmere would never allow him pain or sorry, and he was betting the first part of his plan on a similarity amongst women.
The owl was easy to forge... Lestrange Library had several books on cemeteries across the country, and so the information for the cemetery in Godric's Hollow took him only minutes to look up. The letter read that Mr. Potter's grave had been vandalized with words like blood traitor, and even fouler things, along with James's name, so that it was clear this retribution was his fault. The note read that the keeper of the grounds (a muggle who Marius assumed would not know what those words meant) was unable to remove any of the words, and that he was going away for a few days, and unless she cleaned the tombstone herself, it would remain until his return. Now would she take the bait? To protect the feelings of her son and the honor of her husband, as well as keep the words "blood traitor" out of the minds of her neighbours, would she go alone to clean the grave?
Marius could only wait.
An hour passed, and then another, and he had worked out several additional plans for just in case, when an elderly woman (How old had she been when she'd given birth to James?) came walking into the cemetery. Marius was kneeling near a grave near the entrance, and as Mrs. Potter made her way to the rear of the cemetery where the more ancient family plots were placed, he lifted his wand briefly. There was no point in getting anywhere near her if he didn't have to, and as the cemetery looked mostly deserted, he whispered his spell and the woman fell unconscious where she stood.
Taking another look around, he walked calmly to the place where she had fallen, before reaching down to touch her shoulder and apparate the both of them to a wooded area not far from a park he and Julian had found earlier in the summer when they'd gone exploring. This would not take long. Marius did not take pleasure in the torture of mothers and children, and this was no exception. She would be informed of why this was happening to her, she would be broken, and then she would be returned with a message. It was simple, efficient, and perhaps this time, Sirius Black and the rest of his ilk would learn a much-needed lesson.
As soon as they Apparated he cast his first spell, a blinding spell, so that he wouldn't need to bother with the robe and mask. It was muggy out, and there was no point in his own discomfort if it was unnecessary. He took her wand from her pocket and then pointed his own wand at her again and cast the spell to wake her up.
Nothing happened.
He cast it again, even going so far as to nudge her with the toe of his shoe.
Nothing happened. And then Marius realized he'd killed her.
"Merde," he swore under his breath. Fucking old people. His father had not instructed him to kill her and--
His thoughts were interrupted by a swift kick a half an inch to the left of his groin. He jumped back, but the leg kept kicking, accompanied by a string of swear words and threats the like of which he'd never heard. He was impressed to say the least. He hadn't expected an old woman to be so tricky.
"Madame, I must say you are only making this more difficult on yourself. I have no choice in this," he said firmly. "This is the fault of Sirius Black, not moi," he insisted, taking two more steps back for good measure.
"Moi?" Mrs. Potter asked, taking a deep breath from the exertion of the cursing. "Marius Lestrange then I'd wager. You'll have to live a few dozen years more to put any fear in me, child. And don't go blaming Sirius Black for your misdeeds. Be a man and face up to kidnapping an old defenseless woman, young man."
"Defenseless?" Marius asked, rubbing at his thigh with the back of his hand. The woman must be wearing steel-toed slippers. "You have proven that to be false. I think in another lifetime I could have liked you, Madame Potter. And as I said, this is not for any reason against you, though you are a blood traitor, I know. This is because of Black, and his inability to keep his mouth sh--"
"Every word that boy says is worth fifty of your goddamned French lies, and if you think killing me is going to silence him then you don't know your elbow from your arse," she spat back.
Suddenly Marius was glad--very glad-- that he hadn't invited Barty or Regulus along for this. He wouldn't generally abide such disrespect, but Mrs. Potter was intriguing. He was pleased he wouldn't be killing her and he told her as much.
"It would bring me no happiness to kill you, madame," he said honestly. "But the lesson must be taught regardless. Hold still and this will only take a moment."
Mrs. Potter began to say something else, but this time Marius acted quickly, casting a curse to hex her mouth shut. His next spell caused her to writhe in pain as her jaws were broken in several places, along with several of her teeth. He was sure she would have been screaming in pain if it weren't for the fact that no sound could escape her. His original plan had entailed some physical abuse as well-- bruises to make it all the worse, but now that he's spoken with her, it seemed this would be enough.
"I am sorry," he said, reaching forward to place a hand on her shoulder again, and being sure to stay back from her legs just in case. "I will owl the occupants of your home to let them know what has occurred and where they will be able to find you. I would not wish you undo harm," he explained.
With that he Apparated the two of them to the meadow just behind the cemetery and hopped back quickly. He had learned his lesson well. Mrs. Potter was still twisting in agony and Marius found himself hoping she was found sooner than later. He would not cast any spells to ease her pain, but that did not stop him from having a high opinion of her.
"Au revoir," he said evenly, lifting his wand one more time to stun her. It would be better for everyone involved if she were exactly where he stated she would be, and not off trying to drag herself blindly into town. Marius had no doubt a woman like this would not take to lying in wait for help. She would have made an excellent Death Eater, but he reserved that thought for himself as he looked in both directions and then Apparated back to his father's home.
