Who: Lucius Malfoy and Ministry NPC!Marvin Charleston
When: 10 August, lunchtime
Where: A private room at the Three Broomsticks
What: Lucius feeds the Ministry false information about the Averys
No doubt there would be quite a spread put on at the Wilkes party tonight, but Lucius was in the mood for a large lunch. Besides, this could be classed as a working lunch. Striding into the Three Broomsticks, he nodded to the barmaid as he passed, heading for the back room he hadpre-booked especially for today's meeting. Marvin Charleston, an employee in the Department of International Magical Co-Operation, was waiting for him. Lucius wouldn't call him a friend, perse , but he was a useful enough person to have around when a few strings needed pulling. "Marvin!" he greeted him warmly, extending his hand. "Lucius! How excellent to see you again," Marvin replied, shaking the offered hand. Lucius took a seat at the table. "I hope you don't mind but I took the liberty of ordering our food when I owled the request for the room. Is a Sunday roast with all the trimmings satisfactory for you? It's my treat." The expression on the other man's face showed that yes, it would certainly be satisfactory. He joined Lucius at the table and the conversation flowed as the food arrived. Lucius was careful not to bring up the pertinent topic of conversation himself. Everything would be less suspicious if Charleston brought it up himself, but if necessary, Lucius would find a way to steer the conversation in the right direction. He didn't have long to wait, however. "I hear Astra Avery is staying at your manor now?" Marvin was chewing noisily on a roast potato as he asked this. Lucius tried not to shudder. "You heard correctly. She was as shocked as I was to learn of her father and brother's involvement with You-Know-Who. Nasty business, the lot of it." No point pretending he believed theAverys were innocent. If he was to continue avoiding suspicion, Lucius needed to publicly shun Death Eaters. "And they still haven't found the bastards, eh?" Marvin chuckled. "We've been in contact with the other international Ministries, just in case, but they're sly." Lucius raised his eyebrows as he drained his glass. "Perhaps you should ask Astra. I think she knows more than she lets on." Marvin leaned in closer. "Really?" Shrugging nonchalantly, Lucius dipped a bread roll in the gravy. "There's a reason I am letting her stay under my roof." He lied confidently. This wasn't the first time he'd done this. The other man was surveying Lucius's face with interest. "You sly dog. You've always known everything!" Lucius pulled what he considered to be a 'modest' expression, and picked his fork up again. "I feel guilty telling you, poor Astra is my guest after all. However, with my information, it would be a crime not to slip you a small lead." "How small?" Smirking, Lucius knew he had Charleston eating out of the palm of his hand. Taking his time, he finished off the rest of his dinner. Really, the food here was very good. Finally, he sat back in his chair, a glint in his eye. "Exotic birds come through my windows, sir. No owl could make that distance." "America?" "Wrong direction. Wrong hemisphere, in fact." Marvin thought about for a moment. "Australia?" Lucius shrugged. "I don't see Atticus hiding out in a country that is economically lacking. The States are too crude. Europe is too close. You're an intelligent man, Marvin, I'm sure you can put the pieces together yourself." He stood, making as if to leave. The other man didn't notice for a moment, a grin spreading over his face as he imagined the praise he would receive when the Averies were discovered in Australia, following information he had discovered. His eyes unglazed as he looked up at Lucius. "You're leaving?" "I have an event to attend tonight." Lucius's tone was curt. "I must return to my house to make sure the house elves have pressed my dress robes." He met Marvin's eyes, and his expression softened. "This information didn't come from me, you understand?" "Of course not, friend." Charleston jumped to his feet and shook Lucius's hand once more. "It was a pleasure to see you." Nodding, Lucius left a small pile of coins on the table to cover the bill, and swept from the room. Once out of the pub, he disapparated home, happy with the day's work. Marvin Charleston had one more drink, then headed straight to the Ministry. He couldn't wait to tell his boss, and to get in touch with the Australian Ministry. Maybe there would be a promotion in this for him. |
